Today, I Am Two Weeks Old

"Today, I am 2 weeks old." A fellow said this to me in the elevator this morning. Like me, he has been on the job for two weeks today. It got me thinking about the nature of my position.

I Know Nothing

Two weeks is hardly enough time to truly know the nature of an organization or any relationship for that matter. I don't know where the bodies are buried and I don't know who can't stand who. More importantly, I don't yet know the capabilities of the people around me nor do I fully understand the place they have carved out as a corpus. What have they discovered that "works"? Where do they want to go? What will it take to get them there?

I Know Some Things

I'm 40 years old and have been gainfully employed for 17 years. I know some things, albeit fewer than I'd like to admit. The point is not to list what I know and don't know but to counsel that 2-week old. You are not a completely blank slate. That time has passed. You are responsible to use the knowledge, understanding, and wisdom you possess without succumbing to arrogance and hubris. Remember, the other side of pride is false humility.

I Have Absolute Confidence

Jesus is the way. My life as His disciple is completely different than every other religion's disciples on earth. He didn't come to give me a set of rules, practices, and precepts to follow. The God-man came to earth, lived the life I should have lived, and gave it to me as if it were my own. He did this while I was still His enemy. I didn't deserve it in the least.

There is no power in heaven or on earth that will separate me from His love and this blessed assurance.
