MY THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. NYAGOY NYONG'O! I WAS VERY IMPRESSED BY THE HIGH QUALITY OF HER INFORMATIVE & INSIGHTFUL LESSON AT SISSD!

MY THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. NYAGOY NYONG'O! I was very impressed by the high quality of the informative and insightful lesson that she presented at the Siena International School on Sustainable Development which raised some very pressing and threatening warnings within the agriculture area which may lead to food shortage and high prices crisis if they are not tackled under a sustainable strategy.

I was also pleasantly surprised to learn about Fairtrade that aims to build an ethical, fair, and sustainable food supply chain, to connect successful thriving farmers with the satisfied customers through their preferred healthy products but also to educate these two food chain categories in order to create awareness among them on climate risk changes and threats.

MAIN IDEAS OF THE LESSON?

“The future is fair: how fairtrade is building fairness into our sustainable tomorrow

Nyagoy Nyong’o, Interim Global CEO, Fairtrade International

·???????Fairtrade:?2 million farmers?(a half women) and workers in 71 countries; products sold in?131 countries;?70% of??Fairtrade (FT)?products consumers feel they are contributing to a fairer and more just world.

·???????What?Fairtrade (FT)?is about:?building an ethical, fair, and sustainable supply chain?that connects climate conscious consumers with the products they love, produced by farmers achieving flourishing livelihoods.

·???????Climate crisis is hitting our planet’s farmers and agricultural communities particularly hard.?It is corroding their way of life, threatening their livelihoods, and endangering the very products they grow and which consumers have long taken for granted.

·???????Some examples.?India:?the most common events are floods, followed by extreme temperatures and water scarcity. Other disturbances include landslides and storms.?Ghana: the most common extreme climate events are severe temperatures and water scarcity.

·???????Let’s take a look at?three products we all consume on a regular basis: cocoa, coffee, and bananas. In Kenya, for example,?coffee?bushes yielded on average 40% less berries in 2019 than in 2017 as a direct result of climate-related challenges. And by 2050, up to half of the world’s land currently used to farm coffee may no longer be viable.

In Ghana?Cocoa?production will be exposed to an average of more than 30 additional days with extremely high temperatures exceeding the highest maximum daily temperatures recorded between 1980-2010. That lack of precipitation along with water limitations in the dry periods will cause increased cocoa yield gaps in the years to come.?

Bananas?estimated global export value: $7 billion dollars per year. The banana trade, in fact, remains the cornerstone of many countries’ economies. And for more than 450 million people around the world, bananas and plantains are vital staple crops.

But bananas are also highly vulnerable to climate change and they are easily exposed to climatic stressors. In fact, banana producers will experience large-scale shifts in the coming years as nearly half of existing production areas are expected to become unsuitable.

The combination of higher temperatures and lower precipitation (especially in colder periods) risks promoting the growth of “black sigatoka” fungus which is the most damaging banana disease known.

Finally, extreme events, such as tropical cyclones, will continue to have considerable impacts on banana production as well as on the lives of the farmers themselves.

·???????Fairtrade (FT)?is on track to achieve decarbonization, but are that efforts to achieve a sustainable future truly inclusive??Support, education, promotion, advocacy and diversification are our keywords to work with farmers on climate action.

·???????Sustainability is the critical next passage in our collective human journey. Transforming that into equitable sustainability is where we will truly make a difference. We can have sustainability. But we need fair sustainability to have a real impact.??

·???????We know the future is sustainable. We know the future is green. We know the future is fair.

Excerpt from the webinar brochure:

"Farmers are on the front line of climate change. For millions of farming families and communities worldwide, especially those in the global south, the impacts of climate change are a daily reality.

Farmers are on the front line of climate change. For millions of farming families and communities worldwide, especially those in the global south, the impacts of climate change are a daily reality. 80 percent of the world’s food comes from 500 million small-scale farms.

If they suffer, we all feel the consequences. Some studies suggest that a rise of just one degree could lead to reductions of between five and ten percent in the yields of major cereal crops.

Enter Fairtrade: Fairtrade’s unique, two-pronged approach helps farmers become more resilient to climate change, whilst at the same time giving consumers, retailers and traders the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint.

All this is underpinned by the Fairtrade Climate Standard.

Fairtrade International Global CEO Dr. Nyagoy Nyong’o will walk students through Fairtrade’s climate approach, highlighting key projects on the ground that are empowering farmers to confront climate change and build for a better, greener, and fairer tomorrow.

Fairtrade is the most recognized and trusted sustainability label in the world, a global organization that is co-owned by more than 1.8 million farmers and workers who earn fairer prices, build stronger communities, and have control over their futures.

Fairtrade's approach enables farmers and workers to have more control over their lives and decide how to invest in their future.

As a leader in the global movement to make trade fair, Fairtrade supports and challenges businesses and governments while connecting farmers and workers with the people who buy their products.

By choosing Fairtrade, people can create change through their everyday actions
