“Not Today” - How to handle procrastination
Tomorrow, later, some other time Lazy me often sings this rhyme!
If we think about how often do we postpone tasks for later and more importantly why do we postpone tasks, we would need to analyze our actions and thoughts which result in procrastination. But who has the time for that!
Right?
The truth however remains that we procrastinate and we do it because we have the option of a magical ‘tomorrow’ which we feel is going to be different than today. We think we will be different tomorrow, we will be better tomorrow, hence we can definitely do it tomorrow.
It is this positive futuristic mindset (kindly note the sarcasm!) that is making us pro at procrastination. We strongly believe in the power of procrastination, in the super powers that we will possess later to accomplish the same task but these are somehow dormant at present.
It is not that we donot wish to accomplish tasks well before the deadlines but these thoughts are at war in our mind with the thoughts of procrastination. It’s this battle of thoughts which decides our actions. Whichever thought dies first in this war, loses the battle. Hence it is a matter of which thought should we feed, train regularly, to master the art of war and win it for us.
Since it’s a war, let’s win it the warriors way. When warriors train for war, they don’t train to die, they train to defy death and win the war. They face death every second of the war, but they direct their energy to defeat death.
If you have watched the web series ‘Game of Thrones’, you will remember these lines :-
"There is only one god, and His name is Death. And there is only one thing we say to Death: 'not today',"
These are the words which a master sword-fighter in the web series shares while training a young girl who wants to learn the art of sword fighting.
Let’s handle procrastination the same way.
There is only one evil, the evil thought of procrastination and what do we say to the thoughts of procrastination – “Not today” !!
