Famous birthdays

a. French writer Alexander Dumas (b. 1802). His works have been translated into nearly 100 languages, and he is one of the most widely read French authors. His historical novels include: The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later.

b. American aviation pioneer and author Amelia Earhart (b. 1897). She was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 she disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day.

c. Indian business tycoon, investor, and philanthropist Azim Hasan Premji (b. 1945). He is informally known as the Czar of the Indian IT Industry.

Famous death anniversaries

a. Indian film actor, director, producer, singer, music composer and playback singer Uttam Kumar (d. 1980).

b. English physicist Sir James Chadwick (d. 1974). He was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932. He was the head of the British team that worked on the Manhattan Project during the Second World War. He was knighted in England in 1945 for his achievements in physics.

c. Polish-born Jewish writer in Yiddish Issac Bashevis Singer (d. 1991). He awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978.

d. American physician, chemist, businessman, art collector, writer, and educator Albert C Barnes (d. 1951). He founded the Barnes Foundation. When Barnes died, he left an endowment of $10 million to support the foundation. Today, the collection is estimated to be worth between $20 and $30 billion. Although John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie were vastly wealthier than Albert Barnes, the current value of the assets of the Barnes Foundation are 10 to 20 times greater than the Carnegie Corporation or the Rockefeller Corporation. In the 1940s, Barnes helped salvage the career and the life of distinguished British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russel.

e. German-American biochemist and a co-discoverer in 1945 of coenzyme, Fritz Lippman. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1953.

a. In 1911 American explorer Hiram Bingham discovers Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas.

b. In 1931 Paavo Nurmi runs world record 2 mile (8:59.6).

c. In 1938 Instant coffee was invented.

d. In 1959 US Vice President Richard Nixon argues with Nikita Khrushchev, known as "Kitchen Debate".
