Today, a circle is closing for me and a new one opens…
A few years ago I wanted to do a trip to Ireland, have a pint in a pub and enjoy for a few days the green scenery. This thought led to 3 wonderful years in Dublin! After completing my MSc in #BusinessAnalytics at #UCD, I joined a team of mathematicians at #CremeGlobal. I was lucky to not only gain valuable knowledge and experience but also have fun, make friends and become a better person!
From my experience a university with a good name, good courses and good connections is very important in the Irish market! There are seminars, videos and career offices to help you understand how to think, behave and apply for a role. There are recruiters in the companies and independent ones who have strong connections with the industry, and help employers find you and you find a good match. LinkedIn and pubs are the best places for socialisation and for expanding your network.
In my case, finding my first role was more romantic. I went to the #PredictConference in 2016 just because our MSc director suggested it as a good place to do connections. I fell in love with the Creme Global who organises the conference each year, with their products and the people. Having the bravery of a naive student I send my CV to the HR the day after the conference explaining that I do not mind that they did not have an opening I would like to join when they would and when the time was right, almost 1 year later when I was finishing my MSc I received an email that there was an opening for a data scientist in the stats & modelling team... Before I join I was praying not to go somewhere where I would work with excel and just prepare reports. For almost 2 years I was building models, handling data and collaborating with savvy colleagues and clients. Working in Expert Models, a platform sparkling clean and handy for model deployment, instead of filtering data in excel made me feel that I achieved my goal: work as a mathematician in a software company with cutting edge technology! Mission accomplished, lessons are learnt and the really big extra gift and surprise for me was that I also made friends and I had fun during this time!
#Dublin is beautiful! People are friendly and open, in a booming economy where the companies are constantly hiring people related to technology! A huge tech hub with people from all over the glob working together. A big downside though is the expensive rents of the apartments in a not so well connected city. I found it very challenging to even think of living alone with my dog at Dublin, so Dublin feels like an intermediate step before you settle down somewhere (I guess the same stands for big busy and expensive cities in UK too). Overall, it was a great first step that pushed my career high very fast.
And now #Vienna... I leave Dublin in a week to go to a new life! A big reunion with my dog after 3 years! Family and friends are there! A new apartment and a new exciting role in a big exciting company! I had wished that just before 30s I would have pushed my standards higher and claim more. Going to work as a mathematician physicist C++ developer at #ISISPapyrus working on the #PapyrusConverse makes me feel that I will have the great opportunity to use all the skills I have collected so far, learn new things and be part of a global team with huge impact in the industry!
I am an enthusiast who loves maths and problem solving, I feel grateful that I have the opportunity to follow my dreams and meet great people all along. I am learning every day from people to be kind enough to spare some time and give a valuable advice, that is why I am more than happy to give back and help anyone who needs information. If you want to ask me anything about how is the #Irishindustry for a data scientist or how did I find the #Viennesemarket so far, just text me.
