Today is a big day for me

After months of tests and anxiously awaiting results, I am officially cancer-free and have been discharged from the Haematology clinic. It feels surreal to finally say this, especially when I think back to August 2019, when my world was turned upside down after being diagnosed with immune system cancer—just 14 months after my wife received her diagnosis.

The journey has been far from easy. Six months of intensive chemotherapy, countless consultations, sleepless nights, and endless tests. But by 2020, I was in remission. Then came COVID, and being on the vulnerable list meant a full year working from home, with a cautious return to the office in autumn 2021.

I couldn’t have made it through without the incredible support system around me.

• To my amazing wife Aggie Kownacka, who held my hand every step of the way, even though she can't stand the sight of needles. You gave me strength in moments when I felt hopeless.
• To my wife’s parents, who were always there when I needed them. Your presence made all the difference.
• To my colleagues, who supported my work-from-home routine, making my days brighter and more manageable.
• To my boss, Robert Koslicki, thank you for your understanding, your mental support, and for always being in my corner.
• To Dr. K. Balotis, who has been by my side during chemotherapy and over the last five years—thank you.
• And finally, a huge thank you to the Haematology Team at Royal Infirmary Leicester. The nurses there are true heroes.

I’ve learned that with a positive mindset and the love and support of those around you, you can face and overcome anything.
