Tobacco VS Vaping in the UK
News surrounding lung injuries and deaths coming out from the US has caused alarm and panic around the world. Only later to be announced the injuries were caused by black market THC/ marijuana, narrowing down to Vitamin E Acetate.
Where did this influence and motivation come from? No brainer you would think. However, this fuelled an influx of negative perceptions on vaping by causing panic. One of the aftermaths of this was uninformed restrictions imposed on Nicotine Vaping around the world, rather than the actual cause which, is Vitamin E Acetate.
This again underlines the complexity of a disruptor product in any marketplace. There are many factors surrounding the continued misrepresentations of Nicotine Vaping. Most recently, the effects of nicotine, although there have been no deaths related to Nicotine Vaping.
To put this into perspective, The UK is forecasted to generate £9.1Billion in Duties in 2019. This means, 489,300 hospital admissions attributed to smoking and more than 77,000 smoking related deaths. Representing 16% of all deaths in the UK.
Such figures are an epidemic to public health and society. The domino effects related to smoking would see such figures increase radically if we lose this opportunity as Dr David Abrams, professor from the NYU College of Global Public Health, stated that the ‘E-cigarette panic is ruining biggest public health opportunity in 120 years’
All has not come to an end as the UK’s position on Nicotine Vaping seems more positive and encouraging compared to the rest of the world. Public Heath England (PHE) & the NHS has expressed its view that Vaping is 95% safer than combustible tobacco. Does this means Nicotine Vaping harmless, no. However, such statements from influencing bodies has a distinctive influence on how Nicotine Vaping is viewed. Currently witnessing up to 50,000 smokers switching to vaping every year in the UK.
Such figures are a clear statement to the rest of the world of how the UK is leading with regards to making a positive change in society and supporting Nicotine Vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking.
