To be “AND” not to be...

To be “AND” not to be...

Every thinking person, at some time or the other, faces the dilemma of joining the opposites.

- Task with Relatedness

- Creativity with Convention

- Disruption with Continuity

- Diversity with uniformity

and the likes.

Mr. Shakespeare summarized this conflict and penned it for eternity in his play “Hamlet”: "To be or not to be, That is the question...". In the context of the play, Prince Hamlet was contemplating the relevance of life itself. Over a period, though, the line has inspired and generated a lot of intrigue and interest. It is perhaps the most famous lines ever in the history of literature to be quoted when in dilemma, for dramatic effects. ??

Fast forward…to the present. With passing times, complexity, and chaos creeping in, we find ourselves on a unique journey to confront and embrace questions that, simultaneously, separate & unite us with others. A struggle and an expedition to join the opposites. In the face of the contrasting situations, contradicting data, and the presence of multiple value-system, we find ourselves struggling with “To be AND not to be”...??.

Add to that a societal obsession with over-performance & over-achievement - you have a gripping drama at hand !!

The quest is on - unity in diversity, harmony in disruption, individuality in teamwork, relatedness in the task, an artist with a scientific bent of mind, a scientist with an artistic disposition and flair…. the list is endless!! Such contradictions are a reality of today’s workplace and living space. Add competition. We are now competing with the data processing power of machines…as if competition among humans were not enough!! ?Multi-tasking is assuming nuances, un-imagined and un-thinkable. ?There is little or no respite from the paradox of multiple realities and Omni-existence. ?

And there is no escape. We must learn to live in the state of momentarily discomfort and doubt to understand and comprehend the complete picture...to be aligned to the situation and do justice to the matter at hand. Being judgemental and taking a side will invariably result in a lop-sided or a distorted perspective. Holding opposing thoughts is difficult but the only way out. To begin with, it is a tall order and not everyone is successful always. With practice and patience, one can settle into the odd rhythm and chaotic symphony of modern-day vibrations.

?

Those who join the opposites will invite diversity to build strong & resilient teams. They will craft dynamic, responsive & adaptive systems and build organizations of the future. They are the global leaders of today…and tomorrow!!

The future beckons us to tread on the path where we do not decide "To be or not to Be" but find a way "To Be AND Not to be"!!

These are exciting times…
