TNM powers e-learning for public schools

TNM Plc has partnered Malawi Government to provide free access to internet learning for secondary school students in the wake of the COVID 19 Pandemic.

The initiative is part of the Ministry of Education’s efforts to make sure students in the country are still learning following the closure of schools and colleges due to the pandemic.

Speaking when he launched the online learning initiative and signed a memorandum of understanding with TNM, Minister of Education William Susuwele-Banda said 5.4 million children, youth and adults in the country, have not been attending school or universities as a result of COVID-19 precautionary measures.

He thanked TNM for working with the Ministry of Education to provide free access to online educational content to students in order to access lessons.

“All students from Form 1-4, will be able to access lessons through the ministry’s website; www.education.gov.mw where the lessons have been uploaded at no data cost. The only determinant will be for you have either a TNM number, then you are good to go,” said Banda.

He added that his ministry is in the final stages of developing radio lessons through the Malawi College of Distance Education (MCDE) that will cover the primary school sector.

“These will be lessons that will bring the teacher directly interfacing with the learner through the radio programmes,” he said.

According to Banda, the ministry is developing television content as a way of reaching out to those who would prefer education content through television.

TNM Plc CEO, Michiel Buitelaar said his company regards education as an important aspect to development. He observed that online learning can help Malawi achieve big strides in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are concerned about the plight of children that are home but should have been in school. We hope through this initiative, the children will keep learning and expanding their knowledge,” said Michiel.

Through the Ministry of Education-TNM partnership, Malawi’s pioneering telco will provide free access for TNM users to browse the Ministry’s website, which shall be hosting a range of educational content. TNM has also committed to provide a total of 10 million SMSs aimed at publicizing the online learning platform created by Government.

Under the agreement, TNM will also assist the Ministry with the installation of a Video Conferencing system to facilitate communication between the Ministry and its stakeholders, both local and international. The Video Conferencing facility brings convenience as physical meetings have been discouraged by health experts.

The Education Minister encouraged parents and guardians to monitor and guide their children and dependents during this difficult period.

Banda noted that there will be no physical teacher to guide the students like it is in a classroom situation hence it is important that parents provide the necessary guidance to the students to make sure their children are concentrating and paying attention to the lessons be it television, radio, online or print material.

It's a nice development but how will learners from penurious families benefit from this because I understand its not all learners that have got access to phones and moreover tnm network is not found in all the places in Malawi. What mechanisms have been put in place to make sure that all learners benefit from this good development??????
