BACK TO THE BASICS LEADERSHIP

Despite its illustrious sound, back-to-the-basics leadership is not always a good thing.

To be honest, when I hear someone refer to themselves as a "back-to-the-basics leader," my spider sense starts to tingle.

In many cases, this is a misguided call back to a simpler time when the accessibility of information was limited and conformity was championed.

Unfortunately, the infatuation with "Back to the Basics Leadership" is often an ill-advised attempt to disguise the implementation of a draconian approach and a reversion to "Leading with an Iron Fist."

In my opinion, too many leaders invest their time and energy into romancing the past and demonizing the future.

Leadership is dynamic and ever-changing, and it requires leaders to possess the mental agility and social skills necessary to adapt to the variables of tomorrow.

For example, a couple of decades ago, the basics of leadership did not heavily emphasize diversity, empathy, or self-care.

These people-oriented initiatives are now a staple of the 21st-century leadership environment.

And Yes.....

Some basics of leadership have remained constant over the decades, such as:

  • Communication
  • Accountability
  • Respect
  • Trust

But.....

As we continue to grow and develop, we must constantly fight against complacency and stagnation – and allow our leadership principles and practices to mature.

The social progress and technological advancements of the 21st-century leadership environment are real.

Leaders should strive to be lifelong learners, transforming newly acquired knowledge and information into real-world applications.

In today's rapidly changing and interconnected world, leaders must be able to adapt to new technologies, global competition, and shifting societal norms.

Adherence to traditional leadership principles and practices may not meet these challenges.

Noel … EXACTLY… the cliche of “getting back to the basics” with anything is total bull$hit !!! It always forces us to go backwards and “empowers” that which lacks any sense of creativity. Not to mention allowing for a lack of critical think to building constructively! I always tune out people (especially leaders) that use “we need to get back to basics” bull$hit !!

Noel DeJesus, I love the article. It is a powerful reminder of our constant effort to be better today than yesterday. Holding onto the past and the effort to maintain conformity is alive and well in many organizations. Those critical elements, often considered "basic," communication, accountability, respect, and trust, are elemental to any organization. To lead or follow without them rapidly becomes chaos. The ability to weave those four items into growth, technology, and a zest for learning become keys to success. Great work, bother, keep pushing out these gems!

Very insightful newsletter! I recently read an article about how there are now five distinct generations in our workforce. It is crucial we adapt and evolve to meet the unique perspectives of the teams we serve. It's important we recognize that a one-size-fits-all approach to management no longer suffices. Our teams consist of Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, and now, the emerging Generation Alpha. Each generation brings something valuable to the table, and it's our role as leaders to harness this collective strength.
