It is not a TLDR series: What is an Idea?

The Evolution of Ideas in Human History

The human mind has always been dedicated to solving problems. Even in prehistoric times, people developed tools, weapons, and methods, although the inventors of many of these innovations remain unknown. Early inventions aimed to improve living conditions, eventually leading to the development of agriculture and animal husbandry. Today, innovations cater to far more complex needs. Without the internet, power, and modern technology, society would halt, and modern innovators now set ambitious goals such as exploring Mars.

Scientific and Technological Breakthroughs

History recognizes several outstanding inventors like Leonardo da Vinci and James Watt, who transformed the world ahead of their time. For example, Heron of Alexandria invented the world’s first steam-powered device, the aeolipile, in ancient times, but people did not recognize it as an energy source back then. Only later, with James Watt's steam engine, a new era began with the Industrial Revolution, establishing the foundation for modern industry and technological advancement.

The Acceleration of Modern Ideas and Innovation

By the second half of the 20th century, the pace of innovation significantly increased. Comfort, entertainment, and technology-related needs led to new tools and solutions. The lifecycle of ideas shortened as consumer society demanded constant innovation. Fields such as energy and food production also saw major changes as technological advancements opened new doors. Technologies of the past, such as the CD, introduced in 1982, have almost completely vanished, giving way to streaming platforms like Spotify and YouTube.

The Generation and Significance of Ideas

Today, with free access to information, more people have opportunities to learn and gain knowledge, increasing the number of ideas. Despite this, many problems remain unsolved. Business ideas are often improvements on existing solutions. Some of these can be patented if their uniqueness is proven, while others may only qualify for utility model protection.

Social and Business Innovation

Not all ideas are born with profit in mind—social innovations are becoming more common, aiming to address societal challenges. These ideas can also benefit the business world if paired with a solid strategy. Social benefit and business profit are not mutually exclusive: a well-implemented social innovation can create value in both areas.

The Idea as a Business Opportunity

The success of ideas often hinges on whether they respond to real needs. Ern? Rubik, the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, suggests that an idea succeeds when it solves a specific problem and captures widespread interest. An idea can range from a minor improvement awaiting further development to a disruptive technology transforming an entire industry.

Footnotes and questions

  • What should I do with an idea that keeps me up at night?
  • How do I know if my idea is good enough?
  • I shared my idea with my family, who said it was okay. Does this mean something?
