A Reflection on the Current State and Future Direction
It certainly is a very special time in history, today.?
Simply put, a time of global uncertainty with rapid changes that make the role of leadership even more critical than ever.? Exceptional leadership emanates with leaders who distinguish themselves with being empathetic yet having a toughness them, with being noble yet having the boldness and courage to stand firm.?
And, without exception, excellent leadership is necessary across every sphere of influence—be it business, government, academia, sports, military, religious or the arts.? The mandate for leaders with strong values is vital to effective and ethical leadership.
Over the last 12 months, my wife and I conducted a number of youth sessions for 18-24 year olds.? As part of the framework, the Young Legacy Leaders program inlcudes an activity where each of the youths were able to select their core values – the top 3 from a list of 30!!? It’s always a tough go, especially when there is so much overlap whittling down to the core values.
(Note: it doesn't mean that they only have 3 values! Far from it, the 3 values are the core of their belief in who they are - among others! More on this another time!)
Having leaders today who lead with values consistently and intentionally are in very high demand......or at least should be!! Values are like a compass......
Exploring the essence of great leadership, this article seeks to offer insights into its core principles and the transformative impact it can have on individuals and communities alike. (And by no means, the end all and be all of great leadership!)
What Is Great Leadership?
You may have come across the phrase “he or she, was or is, a great leader!"?
The word great, when you look it up, gives many synonyms.? And there are 2 that really resonate with me – Noble and Passionate!!? Great leaders possess those, as well as a heart to be servant first, and not selfish. That's where values come in.
Great leaders adopt core values that help to make their leadership effective and empowering.
Envisioning a future that others may not yet see is an ability of a great leader.? Plus they are able to craft a compelling vision that provides a clear sense of direction, and inspire others. Having insight to anticipate challenges and opportunities enables them strategically create plans in alignment with long-term goals.
Effective leadership is rooted in the ability to connect with others on a human level! Leaders who exhibit empathy and emotional intelligence create environments of trust and respect, where people can feel valued and understood. This emotional connection is crucial for furthering collaboration and advancing a sense of community.
Leadership is not just about being enabled to make decisions but making the right ones. The integrity of a leader sets the tone for the entire organization. Ethical leaders serve as role models, demonstrating honesty, transparency, and accountability. Their actions resonate with authenticity, earning the trust and loyalty of those they lead.
Today’s world is characterized by volatility and uncertainty, and it’s essential that leaders are secure in who they are, that they have the ability to adapt and remain resilient. Great leaders are open to new ideas and have to be willing to adjust when circumstances demand. Adaptability ensures effectively navigating current – and future - crises, and turning challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.
The Impact of Effective Leadership
The ripple effects of effective leadership are profound and far-reaching. Leaders who embody these principles not only drive organizational success but also inspire positive change in the broader community. They promote a culture of continuous improvement, where innovation thrives, and individuals are encouraged to strive towards their full potential.
Leaders who are driven by a strong sense of purpose and vision inspire others to think creatively and challenge the status quo. This inspiration can lead to groundbreaking innovations and solutions that have a lasting impact on society.
Great leaders understand the importance of building strong, trust-based relationships. They cultivate a sense of belonging and purpose, empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to the collective goals. This relational focus enhances team cohesion and boosts overall morale.
In a world where ethical lapses can have devastating consequences, the role of a principled leader cannot be overstated. Ethical leaders not only uphold high standards of conduct but also set a precedent for others to follow. They champion causes that promote justice, equality, and fairness, making a significant contribution to societal progress.
Last, not least.....
As leaders, it is imperative to reflect on our own practices and the impact we have on those we lead, those whom we influence - whether in person, over social media, through writings, near or far!
This reflection is not just an exercise in self-assessment but a call to elevate our leadership to new heights. The challenges we face today require leaders who are not just competent but also compassionate and visionary, with a growth mindset - and a set of values to accompany that mindset.
This is an invitation to all leaders and aspiring leaders to consider the sometimes overwhelming responsibility that comes with leadership. It challenges us to ask ourselves “what are my core values”?? Does my leadership align with my values? Am I leading with integrity and mentoring, encouraging others to do the same? Am I being a role model that others can adopt (until they find their own)?
In embracing the principles of great leadership and our own core values, we have the power to transform not only our organizations but also the world at large!! WOW! Talk about making a difference. Helping others to determine their core values empowers them to have a guiding light - a compass - in the way they live their lives – personally and professionally.?
Let us commit to being the kind of leaders who inspire, empower, and create lasting, positive change. The future depends on the choices we make today; let those choices be guided by wisdom, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
