The question, "Who are you?" seems simple, but it's a profound mystery for many. I was a lost soul, stumbling through life without a clear identity or purpose. My journey to self-discovery began in the shadows of uncertainty, but it eventually led me to the light of transformation.

I was born to a teenage mother who, like me, struggled to find her purpose and identity. Growing up, I couldn't help but compare my life to those around me. I watched TV shows like "The Cosby Show" and wished for the stability and happiness they portrayed. I yearned for a complete life, a sense of belonging that seemed to elude me.

Living in an unhealthy environment can hinder the process of self-discovery. Instead of exploring life and uncovering who we are, we are thrust into harmful situations affecting our minds, bodies, and souls. As a child, I walked through life unaware of my identity, so I began adopting the uniqueness of others.

Not having the opportunity to discover my identity and purpose was damaging. It led me down a path of unhealthy coping mechanisms as I tried to make sense of the world around me. I stumbled through life, a silent war raging within me.

I believed that education was my ticket to a better life, so I focused on acquiring degrees and finding a good job. But no matter how many degrees I earned or how successful I became in my career, the inner conflict remained. I was a workaholic and a perfectionist, thinking that the right job and a hefty paycheck would fix everything. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Then came the pivotal moment in 2018 when the Holy Spirit asked me a question that would change my life: "Who are you? Don't tell Me about your children, degrees, or certifications. Now who are you?" I was stunned into silence, feeling as though time had stopped. After an eternity, I finally answered, "I am a child of God." The Holy Spirit responded with a simple "Correct."

That moment I marked the beginning of my transformation. I realized that without knowing who I was at my core, I was merely wandering through life, tossed about by external influences and circumstances.

Authenticity required knowing who I was, setting boundaries, and embracing my purpose, regardless of the opinions or actions of others.

Embracing my identity and purpose allowed me to approach the throne of God boldly. I began to understand that emotional distress and a lack of mental wellness often arise when the identities we've built crumble. When we lose the things or people we've relied on for validation, our self-worth can crumble with them.

For many, discovering themselves and undergoing a metamorphosis takes years, especially for those who have survived childhood trauma. It's a journey that often starts late in adulthood but is worth taking.

I've understood that God has two wills: His permissive and perfect will. Many of us dwell in His permissive will, taking the scenic route through life, falling into the pitfalls of our own making. But upon discovering who we are and our purpose through an intimate relationship with God, we can begin to walk in His perfect will.

My metamorphosis is ongoing, but I embrace it with gratitude and hope. I've learned that knowing who I am is the key to unlocking my true potential. It's a journey that requires courage, self-reflection, and unwavering faith.

If you ask, "Who am I?" or feel lost in the chaos of life, I encourage you to embark on your journey of self-discovery. You are not alone, and the path to finding your true self is beautiful and transformative.
