Tis the season!

Tis the season!

Tis’ the season!

The holidays are finally here and with Christmas let’s get a bit sappy and talk about the true meaning of the holiday season.

Neighbourhoods are adorned with Christmas décor, with neighbours who have had their lights up since November 1st. (over achievers) Costco check out lines reach all the way to the back of the store by 9:30 am and the mall parking lot is a shit show. We are stressed out making lists, decorating our house, shopping for gifts, baking cookies, making wreaths, hosting, and attending holiday parties. I'm sure you can relate to the chaos of Christmas! The majority of people out and about seem frustrated, angry and in a rush going nowhere.

What if we just paused for a few minutes throughout the day to remind ourselves of all of the things we are grateful for. Really think about what is so important to be stressed out about?

Is it really that important in the long run? We live in a country free from the devastation of war, most of us are healthy and have a place to live. Let's face it, if we received nothing for Christmas we would be just fine. If your Christmas party is a flop, it’s not the end of the world. If someone doesn't really seem to love the gift you bought them, they will love you anyway. Step back and say “Will this all matter in 10 years from now?”

What if we smiled at the person in Costco that rammed into your cart without a word, or the person that cut you off in line or in traffic? Wouldn’t that be a surprise to the person on the receiving end. What if we took time out to sit and visit with a lonely or grieving friend? What if we walked around downtown one afternoon and handed out warm hats and mittens to the homeless? What if we bought a few gifts for a struggling single mom? What if we told the employee at Costco, or the grocery store, or the mall that they are doing a fantastic job and you appreciate them. I’m sure that not many people stop to thank them.

I must admit it is easy to forget what Christmas is really about because we are wrapped up in this Christmas Chaos. (No pun intended!) Everything doesn’t need to be perfect! You never know when your time on this earth will come to an end. Sit back, breathe, relax, give generously, love, laugh til your cheeks hurt, hug, smile and enjoy Christmas this year.

So, cheers to the holiday season and let’s treat one another with love and kindness and spread Christmas cheer!
