'Tis the Season to Evaluate and Elevate Your Leadership

'Tis the Season to Evaluate and Elevate Your Leadership

Have you noticed any growth in yourself or your team from the seeds you planted this past winter? Spring is here. The seeds you planted during the fall and winter are ready to bloom and grow. While some may only show tiny signs of growth sprouting through the soil, others may appear to increase suddenly. I adore bright yellow daffodils, so I keep purchasing them from Trader Joe’s and adorning almost every room in my home with their beauty. They make me happy.

This past weekend, I attended the John Maxwell Day to Grow program and gained valuable insights that would fit perfectly with the theme of growth and new beginnings. I hope these three insights will resonate with you and motivate you to act and reap a bountiful harvest as you evaluate and elevate your leadership.

1.???? The People Pile- John Maxwell-New book High Road Leadership John wore a shirt that showed a box called ‘the people pile’ with a person standing outside. This picture shows a person who escaped from a pile of people. ?If we consider how to stand out as a leader, how do you differentiate yourself from other leaders and earn the appreciation ion of your team members? Evaluate and Elevate questions: How can you encourage and inspire yourself and your team? How will you measure your new actions and the impact you create with your team and other leaders who can model your positive behavior to get out of the pile and into the arena of creating a positive culture?

2.???? Consistency- Deoin Sanders -New book Elevate and Dominate “Coach Prime” Deion brought a lot of enthusiasm and excitement to college football last year as the new University of Colorado football head coach. If you’re unfamiliar with him, he was a superstar and Pro Football Hall of Famer who excelled in baseball with four different teams and football with the Dallas Cowboys. He shared a few critical traits; one I’ll share now is consistency. Many of us set big goals at the beginning of the year but still need to develop the necessary habits to achieve them after a few months of setting the goal.? One example is many leaders who intend to hold weekly one-on-one meetings with their team members but miss the follow-through due to distractions and other commitments. Leaders often become frustrated with too many tasks, resulting in disconnected employees and a lack of guidance and relationship building. Can you relate? Based on many employee engagement surveys that I conduct and observe, it is apparent that employees often feel frustrated due to inadequate communication with their leaders and a lack of feedback about their career development. I believe one-on-one meetings with direct reports are an excellent opportunity to discuss status updates and potential opportunities for improvement and advancement. Would you agree with this perspective?

Evaluate and Elevate questions: What is your reason for being consistent? What can/will you do to build habits and consistently achieve your personal and business goals? How will you measure the behavior change? "Small disciplines repeated daily with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time." John Maxwell

3.???? Believing in your value- Jamie Kern Lima – New book Worthy Jamie built her “IT Cosmetics” business and struggled over the years, but through her focus on building confidence, commitment, and persistence, she sold her company to L’Oreal for over $1 Billion!!! Jamie compared and contrasted self-confidence to self-worth. She explained that self-confidence tends to be external and volatile, based on what people see, while self-worth is internal, based on how we value ourselves. Many people have shared with me that they refrain from speaking up in meetings with people who have bigger titles, only to have someone else share the same information and get the credit. I’ve experienced this, too. It doesn’t feel good. Although we may have the correct ideas and information, we don't always feel confident enough to share them due to a sense of feeling unworthy. Can you relate?

Evaluate and Elevate questions: What self-talk will you use to remind yourself that you are valuable and that others can benefit from your expertise? Who else can you support in recognizing their value and worth? What actions will you consistently take to show your value based on the tip above?

Are you ready to bloom this upcoming spring season, stand out from the people pile, consistently practice behaviors to achieve what you want, and believe you are worthy?

One last thing Deion Sanders talked about that I don't want to miss, was being in the game instead of on the sidelines. I encourage you to set your game plan, be flexible, make appropriate adjustments, and accept that you are a champ! Spring into action!
