Tired of your Wix website?

In a world where even dog dating services have a website, the allure of having a corner on the web that you can use to promote your brand or business is irresistible.
Over the years, I've met my fair share of people that want a website but don't trust anyone to get their unique vision and so decide to do it themselves... despite their lack of knowledge in the realm of web design.
Thankfully, there's a service perfect for this kind of people! It's called Wix, a website builder that allows you to create the website of your dreams in seconds!
Or so it's marketed.
While Wix is by no means a bad service, it's certainly not the one your brand needs to build an effective online presence.
You see, despite the fact that almost anyone can create a site to their tastes on Wix there are a few points where the "mighty" service falls short that I'd like to mention:
"Web Design is just choosing a template, right?"
Do you want a way to quickly identify a web designer?
Step into a Starbucks and yell "Web design is easy!", they'll be the ones that turn around and look at you with contempt in their eyes.
There's nothing that irks web designers and developers (well, creatives in general) the most than people that think they just press buttons and a website comes out with no issues and 100% ready to go live.
Wix prides on being an easy way of creating a website, no code or design knowledge required, but just because I can use a hammer doesn't mean I should go around my house knocking down random walls to expand a room. I mean, I could, but there's no knowing if the wall I knock down will cause the ceiling to collapse.
Just like any house, websites have structures and having a professional working on them can be the difference between an absolute success or absolute mess.
One template to rule them all
One of Wix's pros it's the fact that you can easily choose the template that appeals to you and your business and have your site up and running in minutes.
While this premise it's certainly true, it doesn't mean it comes without risks.
The downside of using popular tools like Wix to build your site it's that they're so popular and easy-to-use that anyone has access to the same tools and templates.
And when I say anyone, I mean ANYONE.
Even your competition.
Also, be aware that once your Wix website goes live, there's no going back.
Sure, you can change texts, make small edits here and there, but you can't switch templates. Once you choose a layout you either stick with it or accept you'll lose your content and customization.
Are you willing to put all your marketing efforts into a site that your competition can easily replicate and that you won't be able to easily change when it goes live?
"Can you ad CEO to my site? SEO? Yeah, that's what I said."
SEO is a nifty buzzword that's been used over and over by marketing professionals over the past few years. It's essentially the techniques used to make your website appear in the first results of search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, Bing!, etc., which results in more traffic to your page.
Wix has a bad reputation in the SEO community that's been doing better in recent years, to the point where Wix has been considered one of the best website builders for helping you rank high on Google.
While not as bad as it used to be, Wix's SEO tools are pretty basic, not following all of the best practices needed to put your site on top.
For small businesses that generate leads via word of mouth, social media and other channels, Wix could be fine for SEO use. However, if you have plans to expand your business or you're an eCommerce site it's not so recommended, as it's level of customization won't support your marketing strategy on the long-term.
In other words, Wix is the small leagues.
Would you really rely on it to impulse your brand?
The bottom line:
While I can't say that Wix it's the worst thing on Earth and it has improved lots of its problems over the years, I can't say it's recommended for everyone.
Sure, everyone can build a website at no cost on Wix but that doesn't mean it's going to turn out perfect or fully functional.
You deserve a website that’s as professional as your brand.
If you want to stay basic, you can stick to it, but if you dream of more for your brand, well, I'm just an email away. [email protected]

5 年Very well said indeed!! ??

5 年I don’t know much about web design. I took a class getting my graphic design degree and learned enough to know my brain doesn’t work that way! But from my perspective, I feel that templates are to web designers what Word is to graphic designers.

5 年Templates have their drawbacks. You are stuck in the box that you have chosen and it is hard to adapt it your business's needs as it grows & changes.
