Tiracol Fort: Hidden Gem of the State

Holy Trinity Fortress of Tiracol (Portuguese) locally known as the Terekhol or Tiracol Fort stands tall on the verdant hill on the bank of river Terekhol, with a spectacular view of Arabian Sea . The fortification has not just been the witness of historical battles, but has seen the struggle for Goa's freedom, as well as political, developmental background since the last four centuries.

The history of Tiracol can be traced back to 17th century and was built by the king of Sawantwadi and feudatory of Adilshah of Bijapur, Khem Sawant Bhosle. The Portuguese took control of the fortification after defeating the Sawant’s in 1746, making it an inevitable part of the marine defenses.

In one incident, on 15th August 1954, satyagrahis in their protest against Salazar rule entered the fort and unfurled the Indian flag and held it for a day . The fort was in control of the Portuguese until the end of their regime in December 1961.

Recently, keeping up with its efforts to protect and promote the heritage, GTDC has rejuvenated the fort into a luxurious heritage hotel named Fort Tiracol Heritage. Located at a distance of about 42 km from the capital city, tourists can visit the fort by boarding a ferry via Querim.
