Tips to troubleshoot internet issues - For teachers and students in Trinidad and Tobago

This is a basic list of troubleshooting steps and additional steps may be required. There can also be multiple fixes for an issue. Message me if you are having connectivity issues and I can help you troubleshoot.

1. If the video is choppy try to switch off unused devices or check if you are getting your correct speed. Each device uses approx 10 Mb of bandwidth for 2 way video. Switching to audio only would use less bandwidth and sound only may be clear. If you have multiple devices you need to add it up so 3 devices are approx 30Mb etc. If you do not have strong\full wifi signal bars then try moving closer to the router. You can also try moving the router closer to you - try a different telephone line\cable tv connection. The more walls\objects (metal, concrete, glass) between the router and the device will stop the wifi signal. It is possible your router or wifi card\antenna in the device is defective if you are close to it and have a weak signal.

2. Check if you are getting the speed you are paying for by going to speedtest.net and select your provider for the test server. Wireless connections can get interference from cordless phones, remotes, microwave ovens or your neighbour's wifi network. Check if your connection is more stable with a lan\data\ethernet cable directly from the pc to the router. This checks if the wireless network is the issue and not the internet to your home. Check if there are better packages for similar price from another internet provider in the area or if an upgrade makes sense. If you live in a well populated area you probably have a couple options for internet. Click links for more info. A bundle with tv and internet is usually cheaper if you need tv.

3. Call your internet provider if you are not getting your full speed or if service drops frequently. Give them the required time to fix it (5\10days?). If the issue is not resolved after this time - file a free complaint with Telecommunication Authority of TT. Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (tatt.org.tt).

Fill out the form and this would encourage them to fix your issue much more urgently.
