Tips to Survive and Thrive in Today's Job Market

Welcome to The Standout!

How many jobs have you had that lasted longer than five years? Probably not many. (I’ve only had one!).

This is the norm these days. Studies show that if you get a job and you’re between the ages of thirty-five and forty-four, there’s a 36% chance that the job will last less than one year and a 75% chance it will last less than five years.?

Those numbers are even higher if you’re younger.??

In today’s world, job hunting is a survival skill. The people who get jobs aren’t necessarily the ones who are the most qualified; they’re the ones who know the most about how to get hired.?

That's where this newsletter, and Jobscan , come in. We're dedicated to providing you with the tools and resources you need to not only survive in today’s job market but to thrive! ??

In today’s edition of The Standout, we offer the following five tips to help make your job search easier and faster:

  1. Use a Gmail address on your resume
  2. Tackle your job search in bite-sized chunks
  3. Use Instagram to boost your job search
  4. Energize your resume with action verbs
  5. Use your resume to sell, not explain

Here’s the first tip…

?? Use a Gmail address on your resume ??

Don’t use a Yahoo or AOL email address on your resume. It will make you seem old and out of touch. Use a Gmail address instead. Just make sure that your Gmail address is simple and professional. Avoid nicknames or any unnecessary numbers. It’s easy to create a free Gmail address:

Next step: Once you have your new Gmail address, update your resume, LinkedIn profile, and other professional platforms to reflect the change.?

?? Tackle your job search in bite-sized chunks ???

The job search can feel overwhelming when you look at it as one massive task. Instead, break it down into smaller, manageable units. Focus on one thing at a time, whether it’s updating your resume, crafting a cover letter, or researching companies. Small, consistent, steps lead to big results!

Next step: List all the tasks you need to complete. Set priorities and allocate specific times for each task throughout your week. This approach will keep you organized and make the job search more manageable.

?? Use Instagram to boost your job search ??

Instagram isn't just for selfies and food pics—it can also be a powerful tool for your job search. Follow companies and industry leaders, showcase your work as a visual resume, and network through DMs and meaningful comments on posts. This approach can enhance your visibility.

Next step: Make sure your Instagram bio highlights your professional skills and interests. Include a link to your portfolio or LinkedIn profile, and use relevant hashtags to increase your discoverability.

? Energize your resume with action verbs ?

Action verbs don't just make your writing more dynamic; they also make it more memorable. Research shows that readers recall strong action verbs better than non-action verbs. This is why you should always begin your resume bullet points with powerful action verbs.?

Next step: Use Jobscan's AI-powered Bullet Point Generator to automatically create memorable bullet points for your resume.?

?? Use your resume to sell, not explain ??

Your resume is for selling you, not excusing you. Avoid including any justifications for gaps in employment, short job tenures, or other potential "red flags." Save those conversations for the job interview. Always keep your resume positive and focused on your skills and the value you offer.?

Next step: Read How to Write a Resume for Today’s Job Market to learn how to create a positive, compelling resume that showcases the value you can bring to a company or organization.?
