Tips For Reducing Manager Burnout

Tips For Reducing Manager Burnout

Managing a small business is no small feat.

It is challenging to keep everything running smoothly without burning out.

Let’s dive into practical tips to help you and your managers reduce burnout and reclaim much-needed balance.

Establish Effective Communication Channels

Many managers feel overwhelmed because they are the point person for every email, query, and notification. It’s common for small businesses to utilize text messaging as a form of communication.?

However, setting up specific communication tools for work-related conversations is essential. For example, using Slack for work-specific discussions can help streamline communication and reduce the noise from non-urgent messages.

Plan and Audit Time Effectively

If your manager is constantly wondering where their time is going, it’s best to start with a time audit to identify where their time is being spent. Once you have this insight, you can build a managerial cadence and move into effective calendar management.

  • Unit Managers: Focus on improving delegation skills and leading an autonomous team.
  • Multi-Unit Managers: Identify and plan routines and activities, shifting from task-based work to what the business needs.

Time Blocking and Prioritization

Using the Eisenhower Matrix, you can master time management and prioritization.

Here’s a quick guide:

  • Tasks to DO FIRST: These tasks are high-leverage and move the needle of your organization.
  • Tasks to SCHEDULE: Tasks that are important and require focus.
  • Tasks to DELEGATE: Low-leverage tasks that are necessary for business.
  • Tasks to DON’T DO: These are “time thieves” and cause low productivity.

Setting Boundaries

Managers often extend themselves as the point of contact in every aspect of their lives. Setting boundaries is critical to prevent burnout.

Encourage your managers to define why they are handling all messages and establish proper channels for storing information.

Buying Back Time

Managers can buy back their time by optimizing operations and improving time management.

This stress reduction allows them to focus more on emotional intelligence and other crucial roles.

Laura Workman - Very insightful article! I use color-coded time blocking for my days, grouping similar tasks together to help keep my focus. I really enjoy the task buckets you pointed out via the Eisenhower Matrix. I am going to do a calendar audit to make sure I don't have any of those "DON’T DO" time thieves or the more challenging for me "DELEGATE" tasks. Happy Monday!
