Every day hackers find new ways to gain access to your most important data whether it be your own personal information or that of your clients. Just like having an alarm system in your home, there are ways to deter a would be hacker from gaining access to your vital information. Below are some tips to keep you safe.
1) Make sure your computer is up to day with the latest operating system and that all updates are installed. This includes updates to Java, Flash and Adobe.
2) Make sure you encrypt and backup your important files.
3) Always have a good anti-virus scanning for malware and spyware.
4) Whenever possible use two-factor authentication when setting up passwords for sites. This is essential for banking and credit card sites.
5) Check the websites you are using. If they start with https, the s means that they have a higher level of security.
6) Use the safest browser which is currently Tor. When using this browser, people won't know what sites you are surfing, who you are or where you are.
7) Change your passwords often or make sure they are strong including upper and lower case letters, symbols and at least 9 characters in length.
8) Use apps that don't keep your text messages in the cloud. Signal is a good example. What's app and iMessage keep logs of text messages in the cloud, Signal doesn't.
