Tips for passing AWS Machine Learning Engineer - Associate

Recently I passed the AWS Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam, making it the 10th AWS certification I completed over the past 6 months.

Here are my tips to successfully pass the exam.

Broadly the exam consists of two elements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Data Science
  • Practical usage of the? AWS ML services, predominantly in the SageMaker family

Data Science combines statistics, programming, and domain expertise to extract meaningful insights and patterns from structured and unstructured data through techniques like machine learning, data mining, and predictive analytics. It encompasses the entire data lifecycle from collection and cleaning to analysis and visualisation, enabling organisations to make data-driven decisions and solve complex problems.?

What is gradient descent, cross-validation, regularisation (L1/L2), precision/recall, F1-score, hyperparameters, feature engineering, dimensionality reduction, overfitting/underfitting, and data leakage? Knowledge of these concepts are critical to successfully passing the exam.

While the Machine Learning Engineer Associate exam content on Udemy dives into these concepts, the content is extremely dry and non-engaging. IBM Technology by contrast has short and engaging YouTube videos explaining this content. I will link specific videos at the end of this post.

As of January 2025, Udemy is the only provider that has the complete course content on Udemy. Frank Kane & Stéphane Maarek course is reasonable, though can be quite dry when explaining Data Science concepts. After 4 or so watches at 2x speed, the content started to click.? Udemy has a 7 day free trial - I highly recommend this as a way to solidify existing knowledge.?

OReily has sample exam questions and worth leveraging to verify your knowledge and highlight any knowledge gaps. Like Udemy, there is a free trail period for the content

Nothing however can replace hands-on practical experience. AWS has an amazing catalogue of examples in their Workshops website. I recommend spending a few days executing the 300 & 400 level SageMaker workshops to get your hands dirty. (When executing these workshops, ensure you consider what the business outcome of the task is and how the steps you’re executing fit into this larger outcome!)

Goodluck. Reach me or the BJSS team if you have any questions on the exam or any other AWS content!?
