More than three years after the pandemic began, we have yet to figure out the remote-work puzzle.

Companies including Amazon, BlackRock and even Zoom are cracking down on return-to-office demands — and Wall Street banks are getting even more stringent about their requirements.

Still, a third of all desks globally are unoccupied all week, putting $1.3 trillion in real estate value on the line, as Bloomberg’s Matt Boyle writes here.

It’s an ongoing battle between workers — who generally favor flexibility — and employers who believe in-office work is more productive. A tight US labor market has helped give employees leverage, but with wage gains moderating and unemployment rates ticking higher, a power struggle is playing out in real time.
