Whether you started working at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic or you have always been able to dispense with the 9-to-5 office environment, there are a few ways you can optimize remote work, so it best fits your situation. Read on to see some of my favorite tips for making remote work work.
Determine Your Work Style
Figure out what type of environment suits you to make the most of your workday. You may be the type of person that prefers a quiet room or one that appreciates the background noise of a co-working space or busy coffee shop. The choice is up to you and your preferences. Once you know which situation best supports your productivity, you can arrange for that type of environment to meet your needs.?
Stick to a Routine
Having a set schedule will provide you with some structure and help you stay on task. It can also help your body become accustomed to your waking and sleeping habits. By creating a plan for each day, you will be sure to complete your priorities and keep yourself on track. If needed, you can be flexible and take care of some personal tasks during the day, as long as you meet your work commitments. If you are part of a team, it may be helpful to share your schedule with them, so they are aware of your availability, especially for meetings and conference calls. Schedule breaks for yourself throughout the day, be sure to stay hydrated, and set a specific time for your workday to end. A consistent stop time will help you step away from your work and resist the urge to answer “just one more email” when your workday should be over.? ?
Consider Your Work-Life Balance
If possible, commit to turning off your computer or ignoring the work-related messages on your mobile phone when the workday ends. Unless you are in a position where you are fully expected to be available 24/7, these late-day messages can wait until the next morning. Give your mind and body the time needed to relax and refresh as well as enjoy life! Having this work-life balance will help prevent burnout. I’ve heard it said that at the end of your life, you will never wish you had worked one more hour. Make sure you get away from work and enjoy the important people in your life as well as your hobbies and favorite activities.

?Working remotely is a blessing for many people, but you must take the necessary steps to ensure it is successful.? While it's important to have set work hours, you can also be somewhat flexible and use your time for other things like doctor’s appointments or your child’s activities. Just be sure you have your priorities straight, and you can make it work for you.
