Building a startup is no easy feat—you do everything yourself, including recruitment. As part of this process, I've learned a few things that are an instant turn-off and might make you lose a recruiter’s attention faster than you can say "application rejected."
“I get it—the job market is tough, and competition is fierce. But if you want to stand out, it starts with putting in the effort to apply thoughtfully and show up prepared. It’s not just about getting a job, it’s about earning one.”
Not Reading the Job Post
Some candidates seem to think job applications are like lottery tickets—just apply and hope for the best. How else can you explain people answering the phone completely unaware of which job they've applied for? AI didn't submit your application for you; this is a clear case of laziness. If you can't take the time to read the job post, how can I trust you with critical responsibilities? Yes, I know the job market is tough, but that's all the more reason to be diligent.
Applying When You're Clearly Not a Fit
I understand ambition—everyone wants to aim higher—but there's a difference between ambition and delusion; applying for a job that requires 10+ year’s experience when you are just starting off is pure delusional

I also understand desperation when a job requirement clearly for someone with 0–3 years of experience doesn’t mean "apply if you’ve been working for 20," because you are desperate! ?If I specify a certain CTC or qualifications like an MBA, it’s because those matter for the role. Take a moment to assess your own profile before spamming job applications. You’re not doing yourself any favors by applying for jobs you have no business applying to.
Showing Up to Interviews Unprepared
This one takes the cake. You’ve applied for a job, you’ve made it to the interview stage, and yet, somehow, you don’t know what the company does? The audacity of some candidates—telling me they’ve applied to so many places they didn’t have time to check my company out. If you don’t care enough to research the company, trust me, I won’t care enough to hire you. Yes, job hunting is stressful, but that’s exactly why you need to prepare better.
AI-Generated Resumes
Ah, the wonders of technology! You’ve got a resume that looks like it was crafted by a team of branding experts. Except when you walk in, you’re not even 10% of what the resume promises. I get it—writing a resume is hard, and AI tools can help, but they shouldn’t turn you into someone you’re not. I’m hiring a person, not an AI-generated ideal. Be authentic, or don’t bother showing up. More about this in my next article, next week!
