Tips to Improve Your Leadership Skills.

Great leadership is all about wisely using your time and energy, rather than trying to control every move others make. We guide people and manage tasks. How well you lead directly affects your success, whether you’re leading a team or not. Effective leadership relies on influencing others instead of just giving orders.

Your leadership journey is shaped by two key elements:

  • Your ability to help and serve others.
  • Your skill in showing others the right path.

My goal is to support you in building high-performing teams without micromanagement or feeling overwhelmed. To achieve this, remember that every bit of growth you seek starts with change.

Leadership involves mastering many skills, so you must balance different responsibilities. Thinking long-term keeps you focused as you continue learning and improving. This ongoing cycle of learning and applying your knowledge is essential.

What makes leadership powerful is its team-oriented nature. You don’t need to play every role, but you should understand each team member's strengths and weaknesses and place them in positions to thrive. Your ability to lead effectively will shape your success in life.

Now, let's dive into the four key areas that will help you elevate your leadership skills.

1. People Skills - Connecting and Communicating

80% of your success is determined by your EQ. Building strong relationships requires you to listen, ask good questions, and understand different perspectives. Your EQ is in how you manage your emotions, understanding the impact of how you respond with words and the energy your body language communicates to others.

The key skills to develop to improve when dealing with people are:

  • Communication.
  • Conflict resolution.
  • Motivate and Inspire others.
  • Networking skills to expand your connections.

Every aspect of life will require you to deal with people, so get good at developing skills that improve your people skills.

2. Planning - Chart your Course

All leaders are required to set direction and not only set direction but chart the course. Plans are required to be given to lead team towards business objectives. This is all about mapping out objectives, steps, and milestones in a way that charts a path to a specific destination.

All plans require these key elements:

  • A goal.
  • Correct assessment of situation.
  • Development of roadmap with steps.
  • Prioritization and sequence of critical steps for focus.

Leaders are either working on a plan, implementing a plan, or doing both at the same time. Planning is fundamental to leadership. Get good at planning, speaking to your plan, and being intentional in delivering results from your plan.

3. Vision - Beyond Day to Day

Leaders need vision and a leaders vision needs to be big enough for everyone else vision to fit inside of it. Leaders must be able to constantly keep vision in the forefront of the teams mind while also showing others how their vision fits into the overall vision of the organization.

Establishing vision begins with:

  • Knowing your ideal future.
  • Aligning the vision with the business vision and values.
  • Constantly communicating the vision clearly and concisely daily.
  • Modeling the vision and recognizing those living out the vision daily.

Leaders are change makers and all change makers have a vision of a better future that drives them and the business forward.

4. Results - Outcome Driven

At the end of the day leaders are hired to deliver results. Processes are great but processes are in place to deliver a result. What do you do when the processes you have in place are not delivering the results you desire? Leaders must be good at defining outcomes and learning how to work through others to achieve those outcomes.

A results driven leader focuses on these key skillsets:

  • Breakdown and simplify goals in quantifiable targets.
  • Ensure goals have timeframe for completion.
  • Delegate effectively and to the right people.
  • Provide resources, support, and autonomy to the team.
  • Inspect what they expect.

Leaders also understand the key to achieving outcomes is found in people. Which is why leaders are always focused on teaching, coaching, and leveling up their team. Leaders know the more people they level up the better the overall business will be.
