Tips on How to Spot AI-Generated Content

Our modern democracy stands at a crossroads, where the ability to discern truth from falsehoods online holds profound implications for the integrity of our democratic processes. It has become evident that equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world is of paramount importance.?

The digital age has democratized access to information, enabling individuals from all walks of life to participate in public discourse and engage with diverse perspectives. However, this unprecedented access also exposes us to a proliferation of misinformation, disinformation, and manipulation. It is no longer sufficient to passively consume online content; we must become active participants, equipped with the skills to critically evaluate the information that bombards us daily. If we prioritize enhancing our internet literacy, we can cultivate a society that values truth, fosters informed decision-making, and safeguards the foundations of our democratic processes.

With AI available to anyone with internet access, misinformation and disinformation campaigns can be created and maintained at unparalleled speed. AI has been a great benefit to many, myself included, but it becomes imperative for internet users to develop methods for distinguishing between human-authored and AI-generated articles as a starting point for spotting potential mis/disinformation. From the formulaic structure, limited data usage, repetitive word choices, and other distinguishing characteristics, readers can sharpen their ability to differentiate between human and AI-generated writing.?

Here are a few ways to spot AI-generated content as it is currently being generated:

Formulaic Structure AI-generated content often adheres to a predictable structure, characterized by a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. This formulaic structure lacks the natural flow and creativity typically exhibited in human-authored writing. Instances where articles strictly adhere to this rigid template can be indicative of AI-generated content.?

Limited Data and References AI algorithms possess access to vast amounts of data, yet their ability to effectively comprehend and incorporate it remains limited. Consequently, AI-generated articles may present arguments without providing sufficient supporting evidence or references to credible sources. Discerning readers should be cautious of articles lacking depth and thorough research.

Repetitive Language Despite significant advancements, AI algorithms can still fall into the trap of repetitive language. Identifying AI-generated content becomes possible when certain phrases or sentence structures are used. Human authors, on the other hand, tend to exhibit a greater range of linguistic patterns, enhancing the uniqueness and coherence of their work. Some red flag phrases I see AI use frequently would be, “in conclusion” “in summary” “in closing” and similar phrases to open paragraphs that are redundant for human writers and readers alike. I see these phrases frequently used in AI-generated content.

Unusual Errors or Lack of Coherence AI-generated content may occasionally exhibit errors or lack coherence. Careful readers should be attentive to grammar mistakes, peculiar sentence constructions, or abrupt shifts in tone or topic. These inconsistencies can serve as indicators that the content is AI-generated rather than human-authored.

Reliance on Clichés AI-generated content often relies heavily on clichés and commonly used phrases. The presence of an excessive number of familiar expressions or a lack of originality in language can suggest that the content is AI-generated. Human authors, in contrast, tend to exhibit more varied and nuanced language patterns.

Identifying AI-generated content is just a first step towards enhancing internet literacy, but it is also worth pointing out that this is a moving target. Artificial, like growth-minded individuals, will always be learning and the way we identify good quality information is going to change over time. It is important to note that these indicators are not foolproof, as some human authors may inadvertently exhibit similar patterns. AI is a fabulous tool for getting ideas off the ground in record time, but high-quality content requires a human prompt and editing. Campaigns designed to misinform or disinform are often pumped out with limited oversight so spotting AI created content can be signaling, but until we’ve passed legislation to oversee the safety and security of our digital borders we must remain vigilant about what we choose to believe online.
