Problem-solving is an essential skill that is necessary for success in both personal and professional settings.
Whether you are facing a complex work project, a difficult personal decision or a challenging problem in your community, effective problem-solving can help you find a solution.
All through the ministry of Jesus Christ on earth, he always came up with creative ways of solving the problems he encountered.
Firstly, we will take a look at John chapter 6 to see how Jesus solved the problem that came up as he "went on evangelism".
According to John 6:5-7, When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
The first thing you need to do, like Jesus, is to identify the problem, which in his case, was the unavailability of food and resources to purchase the amount that would be enough to feed over 5,000 people.
You need to take time to identify the underlying issue and to understand what is causing it. This will help you to focus your efforts on finding a solution.
2. Break the problem down
Once you have defined the problem, try to break it down into smaller, more manageable parts.
This will make it easier to tackle each part individually and to see the larger picture more clearly.
You can see Jesus apply this in Matthew 14:18-19. It says: Bring them here to me,?he said.?
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.?
3. Identify possible solutions
Once you have broken the problem down, start generating possible solutions. Don't worry about evaluating the solutions at this stage, just come up with as many ideas as you can.
Jesus replied,?They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. We have here only five loaves?of bread and two fish, they answered - Matthew 14:16-17.
In the above scripture, Jesus clearly stated that the solution to the problem was to provide food for them to eat and not to send them away hungry.
4. Evaluate and choose the solutions
Once you have a list of possible solutions, take the time to evaluate each one. Consider the pros and cons of each solution, and think about how it will impact the problem.

After evaluating the possible solutions, choose the one that you think will be the most effective.
Be sure to consider any potential drawbacks or obstacles that may arise, and plan for how you will address them.
A woman was caught in the act of adultery and was brought before Jesus in other to trap him, according to the bible.
Here is what he did after evaluating the solution in John 8:4-11. The scripture says: Teacher, they said to Jesus, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.?The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?
They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.?
They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said,?All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!
Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.?
Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman,?Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?
No, Lord, she said. And Jesus said,?Neither do I. Go and sin no more.
5. Implement the solution
And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would - John 6:10-11.
Once you have chosen the best solution, it's time to put it into action. Take the necessary steps to implement the solution, and be prepared to adjust your plan as needed.
6. Take stock
After implementing the solution, you need to take out time to check if it was effective.
You miss out on the opportunity to gain expertise or experience when you ignore feedback or refuse to take stock of the process that you went through to come up with the solution.
Jesus understood and applied this in John 6:12. It says: When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
Remember to stay focused and be patient because problem-solving can take time, but with persistence and determination, you can find a solution.
