They say communication is key, and that's especially true in the professional world. One of the most common areas where graduates struggle is communication, especially in English. Being able to express yourself clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing, is a superpower. It allows you to explain your ideas clearly and effectively, whether in interviews, meetings, or day-to-day work. Public speaking might seem terrifying at first, but there are tons of resources to help you build this crucial skill. Join a public speaking club at your university, or clubs like toastmasters and etc or enroll in online communication courses, or even practice with a trusted friend or you can even use an AI friend! Remember, the more comfortable you feel talking, the more likely you are to shine in interviews (and future meetings).
Building Strong Technical Skills
Employers are looking for candidates who can not only talk the talk but also walk the walk; they are looking for candidates who have hands-on experience with the tools and technologies relevant to their field. Here's where your hustle comes in! Freelancing platforms offer a fantastic way to gain real-world experience by working on projects for clients. Participating in coding competitions or hackathons is another way to put your skills to the test and learn from other talented individuals. Every project you complete, big or small, is a valuable addition to your portfolio. This portfolio acts as a showcase of your abilities and a testament to your dedication and initiative – a major plus for potential employers!
Becoming a Lifelong Learner
In today's competitive job market, a bachelor's or a master's degree might not be enough to set you apart from the crowd. Continuous learning and gaining additional qualifications are essential. This doesn’t necessarily mean doing another degree. Instead, look for online courses and certifications that can enhance your skill set. And also stay updated with the industry trends - The technology landscape is constantly evolving, and staying updated is very very important for maintaining your competitiveness in the job market. Regularly reading industry blogs, following tech news, and participating in webinars can help you stay informed about the latest developments. Experimenting with new tools and technologies on your own time can also keep your skills sharp and show potential employers that you’re proactive and engaged in your field.
Your Ticket to the Interview: the CV
Your CV is your first impression on potential employers, so it’s important to make it count. It's a document that needs to be clear, concise, and packed with information that highlights your qualifications and makes you stand out from the competition. Most undergraduates and graduates include only contact details, education, and descriptions of technologies, perhaps thinking they lack experience. This is where the projects you did come to play! Write about the projects you did, in university or in freelancing. When detailing your projects, be specific about your role, the technologies you used, and the impact of your work. This shows employers not only what you have done but also how you can contribute to their organization.
Another tip: tailor your CV to each specific job you apply for - Applying for jobs can sometimes feel like a numbers game, but quality is always better than quantity. Research the company, understand their values and culture, and reflect this understanding in your application.

In today’s digital age, personal branding is more important than ever. LinkedIn is an amazing platform for graduates to build a professional profile and connect with potential employers. Create a profile that showcases your skills and experiences. Don't be afraid to add a professional headshot (think friendly and approachable, not your crazy party pic!). And engage with the LinkedIn community once in a while, actively participate in discussions related to your field, share interesting articles, and connect with professionals in your industry. This not only increases your visibility but also shows your passion and knowledge in your field. Networking on LinkedIn can open up opportunities that you might not find through traditional job postings.
Start Small
It’s understandable to want to start earning money quickly, but it’s important not to let short-term financial goals overshadow long-term career growth. Freelancing can be a great way to gain experience and earn money, but it shouldn’t replace your efforts to find a full-time position (if that’s your goal). Many graduates miss out on valuable opportunities because they focus too much on earning money through freelancing and delay looking for permanent roles Or (in most of the cases) because they hold out for the highest-paying position straight out of the gate. Internships and entry-level positions, even if they offer a lower pay initially, can provide invaluable experience and open doors to more significant opportunities in the future. Think about your career goals and how each opportunity aligns with them.
When You Get That Interview: Prepare to Shine
Congratulations! You've landed the interview – now it's time to make the most of it. Here are some key steps to ensure you go into that interview feeling confident and prepared.
Research the company thoroughly. Visit their website and social media pages to get an idea about their culture, mission, and values. Look for information about the specific department or team you'd be joining. Familiarize yourself with the technologies they use and any recent projects they've undertaken. Revisit the job description (JD) to refresh your memory on the specific requirements and skills they're looking for. Preparing answers to common interview questions and practicing them can also boost your confidence!
Also try reaching out to people who are currently working at the company. You can find them on LinkedIn and ask if they’d be willing to share some insights or tips about the interview process – just have a casual chat. Talking to current employees, especially senior engineers, can give you a better idea of what to expect and how to stand out :)
