In this uncertain time of rising unemployment, my heart goes out to those who have been laid off or lost their jobs as a result. It may be a challenge to land a new job in this tougher market, but do not panic! There are many doable tasks that can improve your search. In this post, I will explore one of the most important tools you have at your disposal: your Network.
Build Your Network: The old adage “It’s all about who you know,” is more imperative now than ever. Take this opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with friends and family. LinkedIn is a GREAT tool; don’t be shy, ask individuals to connect and have a virtual networking meeting. In today’s world of Social Distancing, you will want to suggest connecting via email conversation, phone call or video conference. Whichever works best for the other party.
- Tips to Prepare for Networking Meeting: Prepare questions ahead of time to cover during the conversation. Send the questions, a brief introduction of yourself, as well as roles and target companies you are seeking.
- Key Aspects for Networking Meeting: Introduce yourself one again and ask the individuals on their background. It’s all about building new relationships, be engaged and ready to learn.
Remember:
- Ask if there is anything you can do for them (i.e. maybe there is someone within your network they would like to meet.)
- Don’t forget to follow-up with a Thank You note! (Yep, it is still a thing, whether it be handwritten or via email)
- If the person you are networking with is able to provide further introductions or has a pulse on a potential job opportunity, be sure to share your progress or lack thereof (in a positive manner.)
Let’s stick together, stay positive, upbeat, and don’t take your eyes of the prize. Use this time to build your own personal brand, practice your elevator pitch and most importantly have fun connecting with people! Also, take time to build new memories with your spouse, kids, family and friends (some may have to be virtual memories??).
Best of Luck! Stay safe, sane and healthy!
Sincerely,
Kate Piemonte
