Here are some tips for Freshers who want to become Java developers during a recession:
- Focus on the basics. Sharpen your core Java skills like data structures, algorithms, OOPs, multithreading, etc. These form the basis of interviews and on-the-job performance. Spend time practicing coding challenges to reinforce concepts.
- Contributing to the open source. Open source contributions show hands-on skills. It also sharpens your skills and allows you to experiment. Your resume can stand out with a credible portfolio of open source projects.
- Learn the adjacent technology. Complement your Java skills by learning some web development (JavaScript, React), DevOps (Docker, Kubernetes), or databases (SQL, NoSQL). You're a good candidate for all of these.
- Do an internship and work on a freelance project. Even if it is at first unpaid, it is a valuable real-world experience. Internships and small freelance gigs let you apply classroom learning and gain credibility.
- Network actively. Attend tech events both online and offline to connect with professionals in the community. Follow tech leaders on blogs and social media. In the future, you never know what a key connection will lead to.
- Prepare thoroughly for interviews. Brush up on data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design principles, and behavioral interview questions. Polish projects in your portfolio. Highlight areas where quick learning is possible.
In an uncertain economy, it is important to remain qualified, visible and active in the tech community, and to continue to apply and interview.
Patience and persistence will be rewarded.
