Tips on Film Direction
Don’t listen to anyone who says you are (or are not) talented. You may or may not possess any kind of ART since your birth. But most certainly you can learn to develop any ART form with your growing ages.
The golden key is that, if you don't keep on learning or polishing your "POSSESSED ART"... Then one day it will fade silently...
Cinema is a great art form of our time. It provides popular entertainment and is the preeminent forum for ideas and self-expression.
People who direct films come in all human types—tall, short, fair, dark, introverted, extroverted, loquacious, taciturn, male, female. Film making takes inventiveness and tenacity, getting the best out of a team, having strong ideas about the human condition, and a mountaineering passion for filmmaking’s grueling process.
Film making is also extremely flammable, and a spark of ignorance can quickly grow and may destroy millions of rupees worth of goodwill among your producers & "YOUR SELF CONFIDENCE".
DIRECTING: FILM AESTHETICS
Being a film director you are answerable to the producer and responsible for the details, quality, and meaning of the final film. This requires writing or working with writers; envisioning the film’s scope, purpose, identity, and meaning; finding appropriate locations that advance the dramatic meaning and atmosphere of the film; auditioning and casting actors; assembling a crew (though this may be done by the producer or unit production manager if you have one); developing both cast and script through rehearsals; directing the actors and crew during shooting, and then supervising editing and the finalization of the project.
At times the film director is also involved in promoting the production in festivals and other circuits.
LEARNING TO DIRECT
Whether you write your own stories, work from someone else’s script, or choose something to adapt, you will always face these central questions:
? How am I going to use my developing skills in the world?
? What kind of subjects should I tackle?
? What can I be good at?
? What is my artistic identity?
As a filmmaker, you must keep yourself updated with all the latest film making techniques. This will give you an upper hand in your work.
For a filmmaker, each new film project should be about something meaningful, not just an exercise in basic skills. It should be more like a passion for you. If it isn’t, you’ll be deferring authorship in pursuit of technical excellence—which is a common mistake. The stronger and more articulate you are in committing to this quest, the more intense your work is likely to be.
In a film, dramatic scenes center on a person with an agenda. This is a plan for something that the character wants to get, do, or accomplish. An agenda comes alive when a problem emerges that must be solved by the character of your film.
Generally, a plot of your film is based on the diagram given below. This explains the character's introduction in your film, character's agenda, problems that emerge before your character, the climax, the falling action, and the final resolution, which entails that our character has achieved what he has struggled for, in the entire film.
Using film effectively depends on maintaining the unspoken collusion between audience and communicator by using film conventions that are neither clichéd and beneath the audience, nor so private that they go over the audience’s head.
Intelligently made fiction film implies an overarching heart and mind governing the flow of perception. The auteur theory of filmmaking calls this “the director’s vision.” But controlling how a film crew and company of actors create this is not a simple matter and is scarcely within individual control.
In today's arena, the best savior for a visionary film director is visual effects or you can say as CG. Special effects give a film director the power to envision any scene which is beyond traditional shooting. As most modern effects are created digitally, it is a fairly simple process to composite the digital special effects into the digital copy of the movie. All of these changes have helped to make the process of making a motion picture simpler, as film making in a digital world has given filmmakers greater tools for creating movies.
