Tips for embracing feedback (even if it stings!)

Feedback is so important for growth, yet I’ve seen many leaders shy away from it because of the stories they tell themselves. Instead of viewing it as an opportunity to learn and improve, they take it personally, which often leads to that spiral of negative self-talk.

The problem is, when we avoid feedback, we miss out on valuable insights that could make us better leaders. It’s like trying to solve a puzzle without all the pieces—you’re working hard, but missing key information that could help you see the full picture.

On the flip side, when leaders have strong self-awareness, they’re more open to receiving feedback and taking positive action from it. They see feedback as a tool for growth, not as a personal attack. That shift in mindset, and practicing self-leadership, makes all the difference.

Leaders who can embrace feedback, even when it stings a little, are the ones who grow and inspire their teams the most.

Here are some tips for shifting your mindset when receiving feedback:

1.Focus on the message, not the messenger

It’s easy to get caught up in who is giving the feedback, especially if it’s someone you may not fully respect or agree with. Instead, focus on what they’re saying. Ask yourself, “Is there something useful in this feedback, regardless of who’s delivering it?”

2. Find the kernel of truth

You don’t have to agree with everything, but try to find at least one piece of truth in the feedback. Even in feedback that feels off, there’s often something valuable. What’s one small thing you can take from it that can help you improve?

3. Sit with the feedback

Don’t feel like you have to react immediately. Give yourself some time to process the feedback before deciding how to respond. This pause helps you get past any initial emotional reactions and allows for a more thoughtful approach to how you’ll apply it (or not).

These simple shifts can make feedback feel less personal and more productive!
