Tips for effective ChatGPT prompts

As with many of us, I've been experimenting extensively with ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. Naturally, there are some basic rules for crafting effective prompts (providing context, including ample information, etc.), and we can easily find guidance on these principles all over the internet.

However, sometimes it boils down to discovering the precise phrase that ChatGPT will respond to effectively. Through my experimentation, I've discovered a few phrases that work particularly well with OpenAI to achieve certain outcomes. I'm sharing them here for you to try out as well.

Do you have additional sentences that you've experimented with and found successful? I'd be especially curious to learn about them!

  1. "Let's think step by step" This prompts the AI to think logically and can be particularly helpful for solving logic problems or addressing logical questions.
  2. "In the style of [famous person]" This phrase aids in matching styles effectively.
  3. "Thinking backwards" This can be helpful if the AI repeatedly arrives at inaccurate conclusions. It's particularly useful for complex prompts and multi-step requests.
  4. "Explain this topic for [insert specific age/interest/capabilities group]" Defining your audience helps the bot respond in a manner suitable for the intended audience's understanding.
  5. "As a [insert profession/role]" This assists in framing the bot's knowledge, enabling it to understand its own limitations and strengths.
  6. "For the [insert company]" This aids GPT in understanding which company you're representing or generating a response for, allowing it to adjust its voice and tone accordingly.

Helpful, thanks :) Saved for later.
