Tips During A Labor Shortage

By Beth Hutchinson

I’d like to thank Business Service Specialists around the state of Oregon for their contribution to this article. I posed the question, “How can employers attract employees during a labor shortage?”

?·????????Foster an environment where employees are comfortable talking about issues without fear of retribution. Remain open and accepting of feedback by employees.?

?·????????Research what other employers are offering by visiting www.qualityinfo.org ?

?

?·????????Seek assistance from your team / current employees and peers as a source of networking for more employees. Offer incentives to employees who referred new hires.

?·????????Streamline the hiring process. Make job offers promptly or they will seek employment elsewhere.

?·????????Be open and flexible in this ever-changing labor landscape. The labor market does not look the same as it did eighteen months ago, and thus the way you recruit and retain employees, needs to reflect that. If you have not done a wage evaluation, make sure you are at least considering that to ensure your wages are competitive at www.qualityinfo.org ?

?·????????Reconsider your recruitment strategy if it has not changed since the pandemic.?

?·????????Be sure you are offering competitive salaries and flexible schedules. Stay current with social media to monitor viewpoints of you as an employer. Indeed also allows access for employees to review employers by visiting their "Company reviews" tab.?Learn from negative comments, be open to change, or address comments if they are not truthful. Glassdoor also offers company reviews for job seekers.

?·????????Employers should work with WorkSource to evaluate their competitiveness as an employer in the local labor market, gain access to iMatchSkills (the largest database available in Oregon for job seeker registrations) and access to our Business Services subject matter experts. Employers can partner with WorkSource for strategic recruitment options and hiring events to meet their business needs by contacting their local Business Representative at www.worksourceoregon.com/contact
