Tips to create effective simulation models
This is from a panel discussion at the Regional Simulation Conference last month, where I underlined the significance of having a deeper understanding of physics to identify the best simulation strategies.
o?? It has been especially helpful to define the hypothesis well in advance and to make clear what outcomes we hope to obtain from simulations.
o?? Just because we have advanced computing capabilities does not mean that we should consider every parameter we believe would have an impact on the result. Usually, we only need to take a few crucial factors into account.
o?? When both physical models are equally correct, multidisciplinary simulations and optimization make sense; otherwise, we might end up at an erroneous optimal state.
o?? We don't need to aim for perfection; if we understand the physics well, we can still create less accurate models and apply them successfully.
o?? Making decisions is more important than perfecting the simulation technique; as simulation engineers, we get carried away with increasing accuracy without considering whether it's truly necessary or whether it would affect the results.

Below are some of my thoughts which I would like to be reviewed to align myself in right direction setting up ourself to success when the problems boils down to complete system (it can be entire engine, vehicle system, BSFC/CO2 minimisation, durability assessment and design strategy considering duty cycle of system through damage modelling, and many more) Breaking down complex exhaustive problem through application of fundamentals is need of time. Handling system level problems through understanding of physics of dependent variables affecting system performance and modelling the problem in any analysis tool to provide directional solutions to improve system performance.
