Tips for Choosing Your Career Path

Tips for Choosing Your Career Path

At the beginning of each new year, professionals tend to reflect upon their future career goals and the challenges they may face or may want to willingly take on in order to gain experience in a new area of their field. Many contemplate the changes they would like to make to improve. Jessica Santiago Rentas Ph.D., JSR Services’s CEO, has seven tips to help you identify if you are on the right track heading into 2023. She defines the concept of career path as the moves taken to climb one’s career ladder within a company or a particular industry.

First and foremost, it is important to remember that every person’s career path is unique. Therefore, even if someone is in the same profession as you, it does not mean that he or she is advancing in the same direction or even at the same pace. The key is to recognize that everyone is different.

?Tip #1: Keep in mind that everything begins with a purpose.?

Sit down and analyze if you are currently in a position that you are passionate about. If you identify that you are not, then, you should ask yourself if it is truly worth it to continue looking for growth opportunities at your current company if eventually you might actually envision yourself elsewhere. This does not mean to make sudden, rash decisions. It is all about taking the time to understand yourself. If you have doubts about where your career path is headed, consider taking coaching sessions. JSR Services may be the right fit for you!

?Tip #2: Ask yourself: Where do I see myself in the next couple of years?

What is your vision? Look ahead 5, 10, and 20 years. What do you want for your professional future?

Tip #3: Write down your goals and make sure they are aligned with your purpose and vision.

Your goals should be SMART. S = Specific, M = Measurable, A = Achievable, R = Relevant, and T = Time-Bound

Tip #4: Consider if your potential career changes are coming at the right time and whether they will help you grow.

It is not recommended that you make a change only because of a salary increase. Any change you make should help you learn, develop your skill set, and better your aptitudes and competences. Evaluate your options. Ask yourself: Will this change allow me to learn new things?

Tip #5: Meet with a career mentor.

?A mentor will guide you. Meeting with a successful professional who can share his or her career experiences will help you learn.

?Tip #6: Network.

Surround yourself with people who will support and contribute to your career.

Tip #7: Always stay informed about the new trends in your field.

Study. Read. Learn. Stay up to date in regard to how your field is evolving.
