As we prepare to leave winter behind here in the Southern Hemisphere, I've been reflecting on the everyday actions we've adopted to become better environmental citizens. With summer just around the corner, it's an ideal time to consider new sustainable practices we can implement both at home and in the workplace.
Practical Steps for Everyday Sustainability:
- Establish a Recycling Station: Set up a designated area for recycling in both your office and home.
- Reduce Food Waste: Save dinner leftovers and bring them for lunch the next day instead of throwing them out.
- Choose Fresh and Local: Prioritise fresh fruit and vegetables, and buy locally-produced goods to minimise transportation emissions.
- Opt for Recycled Products: Choose products with recycled or recyclable packaging for both commercial and personal purchases.
- Avoid Single-Use Plastics: Minimise the use of single-use plastics in all aspects of your life.
- Share Rides or Use Public Transport: Carpool or use public transport whenever possible to reduce your carbon footprint. How do you commute to the Office?
- Cut Back on Red Meat: Incorporate more white meat or plant-based meals into your diet, and aim for at least one meat-free day a week.
- Take Shorter Showers: Limit your showers to four minutes to conserve water.
- Turn Off Electronics: Ensure lights and computer devices are turned off after hours to save energy.
- Repair and Reuse: Whenever possible, repair items rather than replace them to reduce waste.
- Know Your Supply Chain: Be informed about the sustainability practices of the companies you buy from to ensure you're supporting ethical and sustainable businesses.
- Set the Air Conditioning Wisely: For optimal energy efficiency and comfort during summer, set your air conditioning temperature to 25°C to 27°C. According to Your Home, this range helps maintain a balance between comfort and reducing energy consumption.
- Use Fans to Assist: Ceiling fans can complement your air conditioning by circulating cool air more effectively, allowing you to raise the thermostat a few degrees without sacrificing comfort.
- Block Out the Heat: Close blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day to prevent excess heat from entering your home, reducing the load on your air conditioner.
- Optimise Heating: In winter, set your heating to between 18°C and 20°C to maintain comfort while minimising energy use. Layering up with clothing can also help you feel warmer at lower temperatures.
- Maximise Sunlight: During the day, open your curtains to let in sunlight, which naturally warms your space. At night, close them to retain heat.
- Insulate Properly: Check for drafts around windows and doors. Simple weatherstripping or draft stoppers can make a significant difference in maintaining indoor warmth.
- Prepare for Summer: Set your air conditioner to an optimal temperature and ensure it is well-maintained for efficiency during the hotter months.
- Revitalise Your Garden: Refresh your compost bin and worm farm, and consider planting a vegetable patch to grow your own produce. World Economic Forum
- Eco-Friendly Car Wash: Wash your car on the grass and use a water-efficient blaster to save water.
- Air Dry Clothes: Hang clothes to dry naturally instead of using an electric dryer, which reduces energy consumption.
