What is Accessibility?

Alt text: "Developer jagon vs. everyday definitions: Usability: Approachable, easy to use; Security: access granted, permissions, Accessibility: supports people with disabilities; works with assistive devices.

  • Stephanie Leary: no glitch is too small, often times that minor inconvenience you noticed is an accessibility issue.

Alt Text: How do we support all that?! Most accessibility problems are pretty easy to find; Report Problems (all problems, no problem is too small, a small problem for an able-bodied person can be a very large problem for someone using assistive tech

  • Lena Hernandez: You don't have to have a lot of experience to spot these bugs. All you need to do is be able to open Evergreen and say: "That's weird!

UI Testing - Checklists

Alt Text: UI Testing Checklist: Layout looks wrong somehow; Page doesn't work as expected; Colors are distracting or not matching their purpose, Wording is confusing or unhelpful, Borders are doubled, Buttons are huge, Cursors are wrong.

  • Full Checklist is at bit.ly/EG-UI-Checklist
  • Stephanie Leary: one easy way to test accessibility is just to navigate with just your keyboard.

Alt Text: 5-Minute Accessibility Testing Tools: Experience with using Evergreen; Keyboard; Browser Extension List - Accessibility Testing: Axe DevTools, Lighthouse, WAVE, Firefox Accessibility Inspector.

  • Jennifer Pringle: there's no reason not to report a bug. If there are duplicates that's not really an issue.

Reporting Bugs

Alt Text: Jennifer Pringle discussing how to report bugs to Launchpad for Evergreen.

  • Stephanie Leary: don't be intimidated. It's not you adding to an overwhelming list. Add it - then we know about it!

Color Basics

Alt Text: Color Basics: Contrast between text and background 4.5:1; Color can't be the only thing conveying meaning (status, errors and warnings, links: undefined?); Semantic color (red: danger; yellow: warning; normal operations shouldn't say danger

Buttons

Alt Text for the above: UI Testing Checklist: Buttons: Size (too big/too small?); Placement/Alignment; Words and/or icons (make sense? if icon only, does it have a tooltip); Color: consistent with buttons elsewhere? (red and yellow used appropriately?); Keyboard support (can you tab to it? Does it get a focus outline? Does pressing Enter activate it?) State: if it gets disabled, does this work as you expect?
