Tiny sparks – Planning feels good but action feels even better.

Following the Budget last week ‘small firms are crucial for economic growth’ according to SME magazine. So thinking about how to scale a small business is not just a matter of grasping opportunity and running with it – we have a responsibility to use our unique position to get the wheels turning.

What if we were to have fun while doing it? Now’s the time to motivate growth from a position of positivity. Here’s how to grow your business – and enjoy it.

Be committed

Take action based on your plans – having a clear direction based on your purpose. Rather than moving from one responsive move to the other, pause and take time to regroup if you need to.

This involves being committed to your people too. Hold on to each other as a leadership team and seek out ways to support each other through challenges and conflicting views. Get behind your purpose.

Lift your plans into action

Remember the core elements you need for growth: people, strategy, execution and cash. Create your strategy with your people in mind and involve those who have insight into the process.

From time to time, ringfence space to stand back and review your plan. Is it still working? What needs to change?

Keep it fun

A one-page strategic plan is a practical hands-on way to move from the high-level aims and goals of your business right down to the individual action plans and accountability plans needed for each individual in the organisation. It keeps things focused but also balanced (think about the roles that faith, family, friends, fitness, finances AND fun should play in the process).

Find resources and help

Accountability is key which is why we also advocate the use of an app like the Scaling Up Scoreboard to track your KPIs and agreements. A tool like this keeps everything in one place in a visually accessible way, saving you time, energy and drama.

Remember it’s not just about doing, it’s about being and feeling too. Gain the confidence to take the first (and radical steps) by knowing someone has your back. An experienced business coach will celebrate your milestones with you and keep you on track when you’re feeling lost.

We love it when our clients enjoy scaling their business. We’d love to help you grow your business with a sense of fun, purpose and focus too.
