How to scale a business on purpose

When you’re growing a business and times are difficult, it can be tempting to veer off course and follow an easier path.

Those who know how to scale a business from experience will tell you that your purpose is not a burden but rather a guiding light. It’s a powerful perspective in setting a context for all your decisions, giving you the confidence to direct your efforts and resources.

So although the easy path around the obstacle may seem like the best option at the time, if it's going to cost you more in the long run, is it worth it? Especially if it isn’t truly best for you, the business or the people you serve.

Here are five quick-fire top tips to keep your purpose front and centre.

Build trust to leverage healthy conflict

Setting your context comes about through discussion and agreement. Talking about what’s important and enabling a dialogue is key. It’s well known that trust builds the psychological safety that allows for constructive conflict.

Make purpose relatable and liveable

Craft your purpose so that it means something to everyone and then communicate it. Bring it to life by working out how they translate into expected behaviours. “Even-Over ” statements are a great way of doing this.

Examples of even-over statements

This use of strategic preference between two good alternatives is an invaluable tool. So according to your purpose, you may choose:

Purpose even over short-term revenue.

Lifestyle even over new clients.

Business culture even over profit.

This is a great way of deciding your priorities to help scale your business in a way that makes practical sense to you.

Check back often

For two reasons: to make sure you’re still focused on the wider picture; and to make sure your purpose is still relevant . Has it shifted? Have your needs evolved? What about the world around you?

Get everyone involved

We love it when people come together like this to build a shared sense of trust and purpose.

That’s why we enjoy running hands-on workshops with teams. They’re relaxed and fun to spark genuine aha! moments and genuine cohesion – and everyone goes away with practical tools they can use.

If that sounds like something that would help your business grow, we’d love to hear from you.
