Tinder + Goodreads, a 'Book-up' app

Tinder + Goodreads, a 'Book-up' app

I struggle finding my next book to read for a few reasons:

  • Browsing a bookshelf is too much information to consider at once. Online lists are hard to filter down.
  • A book is a commitment. Picking a bad one is painful.
  • I have fickle moods. I want to find the right book for the moment.

To make picking your next book better I tried combining elements of Tinder and Goodreads.

  • On Tinder you consider each potential match one at a time. People put their best face forward via their profile. Matchmaking is still efficient since you quickly rule out those you are not interested in.
  • Goodreads’ recommendation engine is underutilized. It’s also got tons of reviews and cataloged books attributes to draw from.

The ‘Book-up’ app will expose users to books like potential Tinder matches. Not only would this feel more playful, each swipe would allow Goodreads to update its knowledge of your preferences and improve their algorithm for you. Here’s how it works:

  1. Start by defining your mood. Pick the category that suits your current fancy.

2. Get matches and swipe left or right. The recommendation engine would expose why it suggested each book to you. Each book tries to pitch why it’s lovable.

3. Check your matches dig into the details and purchase ‘the one’

Looks interesting. I'd also want a rating on the "influence" of the book. Often, I pick up a book because so many others are talking about it, or because it's a classic that has sold record numbers in the past.

Do we really "pick up" books ? Or do they pick us up?

I'd definitely try something like this, do you have a build?
