?? Intel Reports Second-Quarter 2022 Financial Results?

Intel reported earnings this afternoon – and I echo our CEO, Pat, in sharing our disappointment in our results. With that said, in the face of a challenging quarter, the PC remains an essential tool in our daily lives. We continue to see the installed base grow, and PC usage remains elevated above pre-pandemic levels. We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver leadership products, most recently seen with the launch of our 12th Gen Intel Core family. The family is now powering more than 525 designs from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, Samsung and others. And you can expect even more leadership products coming from us later this fall. I’m excited, and confident in our path forward.

?? My Next Move

Speaking of paths forward, I am excited to share that my professional path forward has led me to a new role at Intel. I am now leading Intel’s Datacenter and AI (DCAI) marketing organization. In this role I’m responsible for all aspects of DCAI marketing strategy, messaging, campaign creation, competitive response, and ecosystem engagement.?I’m eager to continue to amplify the wonderful work Intel is doing to deliver on commitments for customers, the industry and the world. I’m thrilled to see what more we can achieve! So, now that I’m in the data center and AI world – what do you want to hear about?

Now, let’s dive into the happenings over the last quarter!

?? Apple takes a bite out of its new chip’s capabilities

Apple held its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and while it’s not traditionally an announcement-packed event, they dropped a claim that the new M2 chip will “…deliver 90% of the peak performance of the 12-core PC laptop chip…”. Kind of a stunning admission, especially when you break it down like PC World did: Apple says new M2 chip won’t beat Intel’s finest ”.

I’m still wondering why Apple would include that comparative tidbit in a keynote.

While we’re talking Apple, it seems loyal Mac users may have unknowingly made trade-offs when it comes to their PCs. Take a look at a video that shows how once we shed light on those trade-offs, loyalty takes a hit.

?? Temperature Check: Do you know all that the Intel vPro Platform has to offer?

More than two years into my role at Intel, and the unsung value that we deliver still amazes me. Let me share a summary of a recent example of this…

No alt text provided for this image

Since 2007, we’ve delivered an integrated, business-class PC platform – Intel vPro – to meet the tech needs of businesses of all sizes. Yet, many companies – and certainly most users – may not be aware of or using the vPro capabilities that are most likely already built into their machines.

That’s what happened at Caja Huancayo – a leading microfinance institution in Peru with 4,424 internal collaborators across its 190 nationwide agencies.

When Caja Huancayo met with Intel to evaluate its remote PC management needs, they learned that Intel vPro remote manageability capabilities were already on its PCs. In short order, they activated the Intel Active Management Technology , and their IT teams are now remotely troubleshooting problems and updating software for employees across the country. This has allowed them to save time – research suggests employees can save up to two hours per month when using Intel vPro platform-based devices[1] – and money, increase productivity, and enhance its reputation for delivering quality customer service to entrepreneurs across Peru.

Is your company taking advantage of all the Intel technology capabilities available to them? You might want to check! Learn more here.

?? Watching the Metaverse Develop

Will 2022 be the Year of the Metaverse? I’m often asked questions like this because I helped build a successful AR/VR business (or, in today’s world, a "Metaverse business" ??), and my TL;DR answer is: maybe. There’s a lot of money being pumped into companies with a stake in making it happen. According to a recent article published by McKinsey & Company, Metaverse-related companies raised more than $10 billion last year, doubling 2020 investments. The Metaverse shows a lot of potential. For those of you who are curious and want to get involved, my advice is:

  1. From a brand perspective, start experimenting and learning by doing
  2. Look at the business use of the metaverse as more developed and with clearer ROI
  3. While things shake out, keep an eye on companies – like Intel – taking an open approach to hardware and software, something I believe is key to fostering metaverse expansion

You can read more about my thoughts around the Metaverse in this LinkedIn post .

Neat insights Tim. For the next "Tim's techsights", what's your take on potential shipping delays for Sapphire Rapids processor given the bug Intel recently discovered? Can the impact be mitigated? Also, some of your readers may want to know more about Intel's roles and goals for its data-center business.
