Timing and Tempo

Timing and Tempo

For those who drove a "stick shift" or manual transmission, the timing and tempo of shifting gears is similar to the timing and tempo of the golf swing. The fast accelerator (tempo) will likely have a short shift (timing) whereas a slower accelerator may have a longer pause between engaging gears. Both follow the same geometry of the shift pattern/swing and finish in the same place; they should have the same results, whether good or bad, based on their engine's strengths.

When the order of the movement slips into the wrong pattern the driver of the vehicle receives a not-so-gentle reminder, grinding gears. The same can be said for the golfer whose swing gets ahead of the turn. The shots turn ugly, fast. The question is how to realize that timing is the problem and how to fix it on the fly.

For me, the failure to move my shoulders which then turns my hips into the right back pocket will result in a slide, collapsed arms and topped shot - it's my version of grinding gears and it is u-g-l-y! Fortunately, I can recognize my own error and will immediately take a practice swing watching my shadow to make sure that my timing of movements happens in the correct order. Then, I take a couple of swings imagining that I have a kick ball between my elbows and chest making me keep my arms long and following the movement of my shoulders, back and through.

What is your 'grinding gear'? Maybe we can come up with a quick fix together.
