"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do." ~Mark Twain
Vicky Umodo of Colton, California went exploring on Craigslist and found sofas and a matching chair being given away for free. The person who posted the ad explained that they just lost a loved one and wanted to give away their possessions. Ms. Umodo received the furniture and sat in the chair and felt what she thought was a heating pad. Instead, she found envelops containing $36000 which she returned to the person who gave her the furniture.
"G-d has been good to me and my children, they're all alive and well, I have 3 beautiful grandchildren, so what can I ever ask from G-d," she said.

"Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'

And you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin' "
Bob Dylan, "The Times, They Are A-Changin"
The economy is starting to slow down. Although all the news is still focused on labor shortages, those of us in coaching and search are already preparing people for the inevitable layoffs and the importance of finding a chair when the music stops (think musical chairs).
My book, "How to Avoid Being Laid Off, Excessed, RIF'D, Terminated, Axed, Furloughed or Made Redundant: And What to Do If You Are" ?is one that can help you avoid being chosen and help you land faster if you are. Don't wait until someone says, "Can we see you in the conference room" or "There is a mandatory video call you have to be on at Friday at 3 PM."
How Are You Preparing Teams for Recessionary Pressure?
This may not apply to everyone however, what I’ve found is that, more than anything, managing up becomes important since, often, more senior leaders start feeling pressure from their management to keep getting results. Having them run interference for less senior leaders becomes important. For the staff, proactive, rather than reactive, behavior helps people justify continued spending for a while longer. So, doing an audit of spend vs results BEFORE they start questioning the spend can head off cancellations.
One last thing that is overlooked, during good times people overlook putting professional support systems in place. After all, things are going well. Having systems in place for sounding boards, allies , mentors, etc. will reduce pressure and help you perform better yourself.?
