Times, they are a-Changin’

Times, they are a-Changin’

Nothing stays the same in life…or in telecoms, so it shouldn’t come as a big surprise to anyone to hear that it’s going to be ‘all change’ with BT and Openreach as they move their business from being based on the need to get copper wires in to your premises to the provision of high speed fibre based products using the Internet.

In practice this means the demise of many of the services we’ve been using for several years. Such every day devices as analogue ‘phones, those ones that connect through an exchange, will be consigned to history, as will ISDN, used by most businesses to make calls. In fact, a large number of broadband services will be going, because all of them are premised on the use of copper cables.

Is this going to be a problem? Openreach really hope not. They’re planning a transition period lasting roughly four years, starting in 2021 and they’re going to be using something called SOTAP, Single Order Transitional Access Product, to do it with. SOTAP should allow any customers using copper at the moment to swap to using a wholly broadband service not dependent on existing lines.

If any of this is causing concern, relax. TP Telecom is on top of it all and can help you ensure that this all happens seamlessly. At some point in the next six years you’ll have to choose between FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), a leased line or a new product, SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access). Why not get in touch and allow us to help you through?
