A Timely Intervention: A Construction Crew's Heroic Act

With construction and renovation projects, it's not often that you hear about construction crews stepping in as heroes, but that is what recently happened when Charter Construction found themselves in a unique and unexpected situation. Richard, a superintendent and Jake, a crew lead, both with Charter Construction, demonstrated quick thinking and compassion when they realized that something was amiss during a routine window replacement project.

?The work involved was to remove and replace the front windows of a homeowner's residence. When they arrived at the location on the scheduled workday, they encountered an unexpected challenge - the homeowner was unresponsive, neither answering her door or her phone. Based on previous interactions with this client, the crew knew this was highly abnormal behavior. Concerned for her well-being, Richard and Jake decided to act.

?They knocked loudly on the homeowner's door, but still received no response. Determined to ensure her safety, Richard managed to obtain the homeowner's number from Charter’s homeowner liaison, yet their calls went straight to voicemail. Adding to their concerns was the fact that her car was parked at the rear of her unit, suggesting she was inside.

?Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Richard made several calls, reaching out to Charter’s main office and Mitchell, the project consultant from AMS | Association Management Services NW . The next course of action was unconventional but necessary. Utilizing a scissor lift and pump jacks, they looked into the third-floor rooms. They could see that the hallway lights were on, a sign that someone might be present.

?Concern deepened and Richard promptly contacted Mitchell again, who raised the question of whether to involve emergency services. Without hesitation, Richard agreed, driven by an instinctual feeling that something was wrong. Their efforts then shifted towards preparing for the arrival of first responders. Richard and Jake began to carefully remove nails from around a window, ensuring quick and easy access for medical personnel. Just five minutes later, three firefighters arrived on the scene. Jake met them at the main entrance, and Richard joined them, guiding them to the condo.

?The situation took a critical turn when the two EMTs, unable to gain entry through the front door, resorted to entering through the second-floor window instead. Once inside, they discovered the homeowner had fallen and had been in that distressing situation for several days. The EMTs quickly attended to her needs, and she was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

?The timely intervention by Charter’s team and the coordinated response with emergency services played a crucial role in ensuring the homeowners safety and well-being. As emergency services departed the scene, they expressed their gratitude to Mitchell, Richard and Jake for their prompt decision-making and crucial phone call. It was clear that the quick thinking and compassion displayed by the Charter Construction team saved a life that day.

?This heartwarming story is a reminder that compassion and concern for others extend beyond the scope of our daily tasks. Richard and Jake's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of a homeowner, who had previously been in regular contact with them, showcases the power of community and the value of looking out for one another.

?In the end, their actions demonstrated that sometimes, heroes can emerge from the most unexpected places, even on a construction site. The Charter Construction team and AMS | Association Management Services NW is relieved to hear that the homeowner is on her way to recovery, thanks to the vigilance and quick response of Richard, Jake and Mitchell.

?Charter Constructions' Safety Team would like to take a moment to remind our teams and others about the importance of a well-executed safety plan, a prepared crew, and trusting your instincts.
