Timely Advice From Colin Powell

General Colin Powell died this week after a long illness with Cancer. Specifically, General Powell battled Multiple Myeloma and it proved to be a fight he could not win. Thankfully for America there were few fights where he lost. Powell was an advisor to three United States Presidents, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a warrior to the end.

Powell provided advice and guidance in situations where he needed to be right and at times when there was no room for error. My favorite piece of advice from General Powell was “Don’t just do something, stand there!” In my opinion many decisions are forced when they don’t need to be. This is when someone does something simply because they aren’t sure what else to do. Often times nothing needs to be done and this is especially true when critical pieces of information are missing.

Maybe you’re missing important facts. Maybe you’re missing the other side of the story. Maybe you are misinterpreting some of what you believe you know. Maybe you simply need to spend a few more minutes to understand all of the possible outcomes of a decision and decide if you can live with a worst case scenario. These are a few examples of how doing nothing and just standing there has the potential to benefit you or the situation you find yourself in.
