Timeless. But outdated!

Timeless. But outdated!

The Pyramids are mesmerising. You can't help being fixated. And as one of the seven wonders of the world it’s timeless!

Here an interesting fact, it's estimated that it took 2.3 million blocks of stone each weighing 2.5 tonnes to build. People always debate was it built by people or was it aliens?

As you get closer to the Pyramids outdated practices are taking place though.

  1. Animal welfare

The site of the Pyramids and the Sphinx is big. So you can either walk. Or you can take a horse and cart.

But many things made me deeply uncomfortable.

  • When the horse and carts were coming down the hill, it was like the horses were on ice. As a result they were trying to sit down but because of the cart attached to them it prevented them from doing so.

  • Many horses had knees that were bleeding.
  • Horses were frequently being whipped.

This particular point drove much discussion between my Wife and our 11 year old daughter. And it’s hard to know how to help. But like anything you disagree with, voting with your feet is the best way.

2. Short-sightedness / lack of sustainability

Egypt is a very poor country which drives short term thinking. I found that it’s common practice to place items in your hands constituting a contract in Egypt (apparently) and forcing you to buy something such as a scarab beetle, asking for money after photo booming, charging unreasonably inflated prices for drinks or to use the toilets. Or they will attempt to mislead you we were even offered a ride on a “Government camel” by a “Government tour guide”. Yep!

As I’m living in Egypt I could actually return to the pyramids because they are fascinating. So having a mindset that people will only visit once and will never return is outdated. You have to also consider the impact of social media with tripadvisor and word of mouth.

The link to recruitment

Whilst you can judge a company based upon their job description, job adverts or? company website you need to get up close and personal.

Interviews via video conferencing have made interviewing more convenient. However many people are not thinking about going to the office before they accept a job. And this is a MUST in my opinion.

In fact, I make sure this stage is built into the recruitment processes I support. Because it enables people to test the commute, see the office, meet people and gain an insight into whether they could see themselves working there helping to increase the longevity of their tenure helping to reduce the risk on all people.

All people are then making informed decisions based upon facts, data points and informed judgements and opinions.

My final thoughts

An interview is a two-way process. And unless you go and see with your own eyes you will not be able to complete your own due diligence.

Don’t be lured into glossy websites and slick marketing material because it may be misleading.

So take the time, complete your due diligence and make sure you are comfortable before making a commitment. And stepping into the office forms part of this process.

I’m going on holiday next week to relax and recharge. However, commencing Monday 31st October I should have recruited for all of my current campaigns. So I will have 100% capacity to support your recruitment needs and/or those of your colleagues or friends. And therefore if you wish to work with a specialist finance recruiter who is a qualified CIMA Accountant just send me a message and we’ll work on your problem together.

Stay lucky. Stay Jammy.

Talk next week.
