Timeless lessons from successful marketers I have known

I thought Helen Edwards ' take on #ageism and exceptionalism...was exceptional. We should value great talents however long they have been in the business.

It struck me that the most successful marketers I have had the privilege of working with, regardless of age, have learned these 6 simple timeless lessons:

  1. A good way of avoiding potholes is to talk to someone who has already fallen head first into some of them (they ask the most questions of those around them)
  2. Learn to recognise the burning smell of your own youthful over-confidence (before others do)
  3. To be interesting and of value to others it’s best to read obsessively and pursue new experiences with childlike enthusiasm?(if you don't put new things into your head, little of interest is likely emerge from it at any age)
  4. Appreciate that some things in marketing change dramatically over the years, most don’t (learnings from 3+ minutes ago are probably still valuable)
  5. Always employ people smarter than you (whether you've been in a business 5 days or 50 years)
  6. The future belongs to those younger than you (so listen to what they have to say)

Frankly, if I'd listened more earlier who knows where I may have ended up.

A lovely short but important read. Child-like curiosity and a life-long learning habit means that if we (young, less young and older) are all in the same room asking each other questions - it's likely to result in results that are far beyond any room where only one of us exist.
